Finland is leading tournament favorite Canada in the semifinals of men's hockey at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Finland struck first in the opening period as Mikko Rantanen scored just three seconds into a power play. The Finns doubled their lead as Erik Haula scored on a short-handed breakaway, but Canada got back in the game with a power-play goal from Sam Reinhart.
Canada is without team captain Sidney Crosby today following the injury he suffered against Czech Republic on Wednesday.
Finland only with two shots this entire period, one of which was the short-handed goal.
P2 2:47 – Finland 2, Canada 1
Wow! From my vantage point, I thought that Tom Wilson shot through traffic was going to squeak by Saros.
Save made from the Finland goalie and it remains a one-goal game.
P2 3:52 – Finland 2, Canada 1
Granlund blasts a wrist shot that goes wide of Jordan Binnington.
Feels like that was Finland’s first chance of the period since the shorthanded goal.
Finland might have naturally thought they could sit on a 2-0 lead considering how well they check and defend. But the extent to which Finland seems satisfied to not play with the puck is not a sound strategy with this much time left.
Connor McDavid’s assist on Reinhart’s power-play goal was his 12th point of the tournament, which is the most in history at an Olympic tournament (with NHL participation).
Despite Reinhart's goal, Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier haven't been liking what they're seeing from Canada so far.
A key part of that power play goal: Cale Makar’s keep in after the puck almost slipped out of the zone.
Canada finally breaks through, with a power play goal from Sam Reinhart. Some redemption for Reinhart, and maybe this will open the door to more playing time.
Sam Reinhart's first goal of the tournament. The power-play stud cuts the deficit in half with 5:40 to go in the second.
P2 5:40 – Finland 2, Canada 1
Canada is back in this game. Sam Reinhart tips a shot in front of the net from a Cale Makar point blast.
Finland’s lead down to one. Loud cheers from the crowd.
Canada to the power play. Heading into today, Canada was operating at 41.7% after going 5-for-12 on the advantage. Finland, obviously, scored short-handed on Canada’s only opportunity today.
P2 6:25 – Finland 2, Canada 0
Lundell high sticks his Florida Panthers teammate Brad Marchand.
Canada to the power play, looking to get back on this game.
For American viewers watching on Peacock… the game is finally shifting to USA Network on cable. So if you want to avoid being a minute behind live action, this is your chance to flip.
P2 7:30 – Finland 2, Canada 0
Add Macklin Celebrini to the list of snakebitten players in this game. He has another shot on net, looking to get a goal top shelf.
Not to be for the 19-year-old.
Finland only has one slot shot so far this period: the short-handed goal from Haula. Normally, I’d say this type of defensive shell is a little to risky especially against a team as high-powered as Canada (who has three slot shots so far). But it’s working!
P2 7:55 – Finland 2, Canada 0
Nathan MacKinnon dances his way into the attacking zone before going to the right side. He whips a shot but Saros makes another save.
Still a two-goal lead for Finland.
Canada needs some of its offensive depth to show up here. Reinhart, Hagel, Jarvis, Bennett and Marchand all with just one point all tournament five games in. And not a lot of offense from the D either overall.
Finland isn’t letting up the pressure. As much as Canada’s gaining the offensive zone, their pesky sticks just keep breaking up plays.
Shots 8-2 Canada midway through second period, most of time spent in Finnish zone. But Finland's bend-don't-break D-zone coverage doing the job so far.
