Tournament favorite Canada is tied with Czechia after trailing 2-1 at the first intermission in the men's hockey quarterfinals at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Macklin Celebrini opened the scoring just over three minutes into the game off a beautiful assist from Connor McDavid. Lukas Sedlak quickly tied the score following a Mark Stone turnover, before David Pastrnak scored on a power play to give Czechia the lead.
Canada captain Sidney Crosby suffered an injury on a hit by Radko Gudas in the second period and is out for the rest of the game. Nathan MacKinnon then tied the score on a power play midway through the second.
In other quarterfinal action, Nino Niederreiter has given Switzerland a 2-0 lead over Finland heading into the second period at Rho.
Wayne Gretzky is also attending today’s Canada-Czechia game. Of course, he was a part of that 1998 Canada Olympic team that lost to Czechia in the semifinals where he wasn’t selected to take a shot in the shootout.
P3 13:30 – Canada 2, Czechia 2
Good chance for Czechia here in the third period. Martin Necas skates toward the net and fires a backhanded shot.
Jordan Binnington makes the comfortable save.
P3 15:02 – Canada 2, Czechia 2
Ondrej Palat with a hard check on Drew Doughty into the boards.
Things are getting physical and chippy in this third period.
Mark Messier is in attendance at Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena for today’s Canada-Czechia quarterfinal.
Michal Kempny just got away with a high-stick on Brandon Hagel. Brad Marchand is furious, and understandably so. But I do enjoy the image of Marchand complaining to a ref about someone getting away with something.
P3 17:32 – Canada 2, Czechia 2
The jumbotron shows a replay of what appears to be a high stick on Brandon Hagel.
The referees are having a discussion but no penalty handed out.
Crowd delivers some loud boos.
P3 19:10 – Canada 2, Czechia 2
Czechia kills off the penalty. We are back to even strength at the start of the third period.
Hockey Canada says that Sidney Crosby will not return in this game.
P3 20:00 – Canada 2, Czechia 2
The third period is underway as Canada begins with 49 seconds of a power play.
No Sidney Crosby as Team Canada comes out to start the third period.
Canada and Czechia players return to the ice.
Moments away from a dramatic third period.
Here we go!
Liam M.: Canada’s porous defense is more at fault thus far than Binnington (or Dostal's play thus far). Opponents have a free ride into the Canadian end and are allowed to camp out in the slot. If Canada continues to play such uninspired, disciplined defense, their luck may run out.
Samuel S.: Do we think Canada's B Squad could beat this Czechia team? I heard they would win gold.
Brian R.: About time for Suzuki to justify his spot on the team. Been brutal so far.

I mentioned in our pregame coverage about Canada’s last loss in a quarterfinal at the men’s Olympic hockey tournament with NHL participation.
At the Sochi 2014 Games, Canada also had a scare against Latvia. They barely held on, beating Latvia 2-1 in a defensive game.
These are the type of games, if you can advance, that can build character for a group.
We shall see how Canada responds.
Matt S.: As a Pens fan: crap, dang, shoot, darn, bad, NOOOO. Team Canada can probably survive a Crosby injury. The Penguins can’t.
Joey R.: I'm surprised Crosby wasn't ready for that hit, you have to know that Gudas is gonna finish his check. He probably did more damage trying to duck it than just taking the hit.
Mark D.: If Crosby is injured long term because of this, I will cry.
Mike C.: Gudas out to injure…useless.

We've still got a period to play and a lot can happen. But you might be wondering what the Olympic overtime rules are?
In a playoff (or bronze medal) game, overtime lasts 10 minutes and is three-on-three. If OT doesn’t solve anything, then a shootout.
Pretty wild that these intense games come down to the chaos of three-on-three.
Ice was tilted and Dostal was spectacular in that second period.
Canada played with a lot of desperation. It will take more of that in the third to win this game.
The Crosby injury is going to force someone on Canada to step up in his absence. Should they advance, this adversity will make them stronger for future games.
Dostal might end up making 50 saves in this game. Binnington made a couple huge saves, but was not tested nearly as much as Dostal in the frame. They were Grade A chances though.
Below are the team stats through two periods of play:
Saves:
Shots on goal:
PIM:
PP time:

We're finally getting the game we want. It's 2-2 through two. Canada, possibly without Sidney Crosby, will have 49 seconds of power-play time on fresh ice to start the third. Buckle up.
