Team USA closed out the Olympic hockey group stage with its most complete performance yet, rolling past Germany 5-1 on Sunday to lock up a quarterfinal bye.
The Americans controlled play early with a heavy shot advantage, finally breaking through late in the first, then piled on in the second and third behind a two-goal, three-point day from captain Auston Matthews.
Connor Hellebuyck was sharp in net and took a shutout into the final nine minutes before Tim Stutzle spoiled it, but the USA response never slowed as Zach Werenski, Brock Faber, Tage Thompson, and Matthews again rounded out the scoring.
With the win, Team USA advances straight to the quarterfinals and will face the winner of Latvia vs. Sweden.
Team USA secures the bye and will meet the winner of Latvia vs. Sweden in the quarterfinals.
Germany posed a different threat to the USA than their two other opponents, Denmark and Latvia, but it was probably Team USA’s most complete game at these olympics.
Auston Matthews notched two goals and an assist, while Connor Hellebuyck allowed only one goal.
Two minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct on Matthew Tkachuk.
The shutout is gone, but the Americans haven’t stopped shooting.
They’re up to 36 shots, while the Germans have put up a great effort with 24 shots.
Tim Stutzle puts Team Germany on the board and Hellebuyck’s shutout is broken.

Matthews knows exactly where to be, and it results in Team USA’s fifth goal of the day.

We have 20 more minutes to go, as USA hold a 3-0 lead.
The Americans score twice in the second period, one by Auston Matthews, the other by Brock Faber.
That’s two goals from USA defensemen today.
USA takes the three goal lead into the third set.
Team USA get another late-period goal, as Brock Faber delivers from long-range to score.
Brady and Matthew Tkachuk are credited with assists.
There was some deliberation over whether Jack Eichel touched the puck with a high stick, and plenty of jeers from Germany hockey fans, but nothing came of it.

Lots of back and forth between the USA and Germany, with Auston Matthews scoring the only goal of the period.
The Germans have been unable to score on two power plays.
Predictably, the Tkachuks have had a few huge hits.
Team Germany will be back on the power play.
Two minutes for slashing on Zach Werenski.
Auston Matthews and Team USA immediately capitalize on the power play, directly after finishing with a penalty kill of their own.
Assisted by Quinn Hughes and Tage Thompson.

The second period begins as Team USA looks to pad a 1-0 lead.
Shots after first period
With only eight seconds left in the first period, Team USA finally scores with a goal that felt like it was a long-time coming.
Zach Werenski scores the goal from the right of the net, as he goes between the legs of the German goaltender Maximilian Franzreb.
Auston Matthews is credited with the assist.

Still tied 0-0, but Team USA is outshooting Germany 13-3, and it feels like only a matter of time before the puck slips past the German goaltender.
There were about four shots from Team USA during that power play, but they were unable to put the puck in the net.
Auston Matthews and Jack Hughes did collide in a weird play, but both players seemed to be okay.
Two minutes for hooking on Lukas Kalble.
In order to earn the No. 1 overall seed heading into the quarterfinal, USA must out-score Germany by 11 goals.
Milano Santagiulia Arena has a strong Germany hockey contingent, providing the bulk of the noise from puck drop onward.
The final game of the Olympic Hockey group stage is underway as Team USA and Germany battle.
Mike Sullivan opts to return to Connor Hellebuyck this game, after starting Jeremy Swayman last game.
Jake Oettinger is suited up as the backup.
Tkacheichel Line appears to have the “win faceoff, score” play down.
