Aside from falling short of the No. 1 seed, the United States accomplished what it set out to accomplish in the preliminary round, winning all three games.
Now, the real fun begins. After defeating Germany 5-1 on Sunday, the U.S. will await its quarterfinal opponent and a potential win-or-go-home matchup with No. 7 Sweden.
The USA locked up the No. 2 seed and Group C title with the help of Auston Matthews, who scored twice in the victory over Germany. Connor Hellebuyck settled in with a strong performance, while the Tkachuk brothers found their edge and even got chippy with the Germans as they combined for three points.
