The New Jersey Devils are set to take on the Minnesota Wild on Monday night at Grand Casino Arena.
The Devils enter this matchup struggling, as they’ve dropped each of their last four games and eight of their last 10 contests.
However, they’ve won five straight meetings against the Wild, going back to 2023.
Can Jack Hughes and company keep that streak alive on Monday night?
Despite their recent success of five consecutive wins over the Wild, the Devils may have a tough time in this matchup.
The Wild have been great on home ice this season, owning a strong 13-4-6 record at Grand Casino Arena. Conversely, the Devils are 11-13-0 on the road.
When these teams met earlier this season back on October 22, New Jersey delivered a 4-1 win.
However, the Wild have improved greatly since that meeting, while the Devils have gone downhill.
The emergence of Jesper Wallstedt between the pipes and the addition of Quinn Hughes on the blue line has done wonders for Minnesota.
Wallstedt is 12-2-4 with a strong .923 save percentage and 2.28 goals-against average, while Hughes has racked up 16 points (1g, 15a) in 14 games with his new team.
Along with Kirill Kaprizov and Matthew Boldy, Minnesota look to have too much offensive firepower for New Jersey to handle in this one.
Minnesota’s offense has reached a new gear with Hughes in the lineup, and the Wild have scored 3.6 goals per game over their last eight contests.
Hughes and company should be able to find success against a New Jersey team that has allowed 17 goals over its last 3 games.
Jacob Markstrom is slated to get the start between the pipes for the Devils, and the last time he was in action he allowed nine goals to the Islanders on January 6.
He should post a better stat line than that contest, but his .878 save percentage and 3.48 goals-against average through 21 games this season don’t warrant much confidence that he will be able to completely shut down Minnesota’s attack.
The Devils haven’t been as strong offensively, but Wallstedt has allowed three goals per game over his last six games, having allowed multiple goals in all six.
Look for Minnesota to do most of the damage, but New Jersey should be able to light the lamp enough to take this one over the 5.5 total goals.
