The University of Vermont men’s hockey team sank further down in the Hockey East standings after their latest game.
The Catamounts scored first against the University of Massachusetts Lowell Riverhawks but then surrendered four straight unanswered goals, leading to a 4-2 loss on Friday, Feb. 13. Vermont now stands a point behind UMass Lowell, sitting at 10th place in the conference standings.
Ethan Burroughs scored first for Vermont, finding a wide-open net to put the Catamounts up 1-0 early. Jay Ahearn responded shortly after for the Riverhawks to even things back up at 1-1.
A defensive second period was followed by an offensive onslaught from UMass Lowell. Diego Buttazzoni got things going with a power play goal to give the Riverhawks the 2-1 lead. Dillian Bentley and Dominick Rivelli then scored after Buttazzoni to give U-Mass Lowell a commanding 4-1 lead.
Thomas Sinclair scored a power play goal for Vermont, but the Catamounts were unable to add any more goals after that, leading to a 4-2 finish inside Gutterson Fieldhouse.
Vermont will look for redemption on Saturday, Feb. 14, when the Catamounts face UMass Lowell in a rematch right back at Gutterson Fieldhouse. Puck drop is at 6 p.m.
