‘Pink in the Rink’: Aspen High School to host breast cancer awareness hockey game – AspenTimes.com

Fans are encouraged to wear pink at the Feb. 10 hockey game at Aspen’s Lewis Ice Arena, an evening dedicated to breast health awareness.
“Pink in the Rink,” part of Pink Out for a Cure, will start at 7 p.m. Feb. 10 at Lewis Ice Arena in the Aspen Recreation Center, 861 Maroon Creek Road, when Aspen High School faces Glenwood Springs High School in a Colorado High School Activities Association league game.
“We’ve never been part of a hockey event before, and we’re genuinely excited to be the benefiting nonprofit for Pink in the Rink,” Founder of Tits Deep for Breast Cancer Stephanie Hay said in a press release. “We can’t wait to see how our tight-knit mountain community shows up for local families, survivors, and everyone impacted by breast cancer.”
Aspen Valley Health is sponsoring the event.
“Breast cancer hits close to home for so many families in Roaring Fork Valley, and events like this remind us why we do what we do,” Chief Growth and Marketing Officer at Aspen Valley Health Jennifer Slaughter said.
The Aspen High School varsity hockey team is bringing back the event, last held in 2015 by the Aspen Leafs junior hockey team. The players are excited to celebrate their mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and friends by wearing pink and playing hockey while raising awareness for breast cancer, according to a press release.
“Pink in the Rink is important to me because breast cancer took my grandmother away before I ever met her. If we can support those affected, they will have the opportunity to meet their grandchildren,” Aspen High School Senior Carter Kuhlman said.
Longtime local Deb Demeulenaere, a mammographer at Aspen Valley Health’s breast center for more than 45 years, will perform the ceremonial puck drop to start the evening.
The community night supports Roaring Fork Valley families, honors survivors, and remembers loved ones lost. All proceeds benefit the Aspen-based Tits Deep for Breast Cancer, a 501(c)(3) committed to education, advocacy, and outreach focused on breast health and risk awareness, helping women detect cancer early enough to save lives.
“Seeing how far we’ve come as a nonprofit serving young women is an absolute honor, and I’m grateful for the community that’s backed us,” Hay said. “I’m proud to represent my mom and best friend, who both died of breast cancer at 33 — and to help ensure other high-risk young women don’t have to face that loss alone.”
Slaughter added that it is an excuse to watch great hockey and cheer on our local teams while rallying behind a great cause.
