The Hungarian U18 women’s ice hockey team won their playoff game against Finland, finishing seventh and remaining in Group A at the World Championship in Canada. Zsuzsanna Kolbenheyer, president of the Hungarian Ice Hockey Federation (MJSZ), hopes that as many players as possible from the U18 women’s squad, that earned its place among the elite, will become regular members of the senior national team.
After losing all three group-stage games and its quarterfinal at the Group A World Championship in Canada, the Hungarian U18 women’s ice hockey team faced Finland on Saturday in its final match, battling for seventh place and survival in the tournament.
The Finns took the lead twice in the first period, but the Hungarian team responded to both goals, and the score was 2-2 going into the second period. The Finnish team took the lead again in the next twenty minutes, but this time the Hungarians not only responded, but also took the lead.
In the 44th minute, the score was tied again, then came Réka Hiezl’s second goal and Petra Polónyi’s double in the last ten minutes; there was even time for the Finns to score once between the last two goals. The Hungarian team fought hard to secure seventh place in Group A, meaning they will remain among the best, with a 7-5 victory.
Zsuzsanna Kolbenheyer, MJSZ President and member of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Executive Committee, emphasized that the entire team and staff deserve tremendous recognition for their hard work throughout the season in preparation for the tournament, and they are delighted that their efforts have borne fruit.

In 2027, Canada, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia will be their opponents in the top division based on the world rankings, while the other four teams will be the current world champions United States, Sweden, Switzerland, and the promoted Germans. The venue and exact date of the tournament have not yet been announced.
The mixed relay team finished almost neck and neck with the Dutch and Italian teams, which could easily be a win at the Olympics.Continue reading
