The Ducks bleed goals on defense, and the Stars are playing the second half of a back-to-back. This has all the makings of clearing Over 6.5, a number Anaheim games have topped in eight straight.
NHL
The Anaheim Ducks host the Dallas Stars in the second game of tonight’s TNT doubleheader.
Anaheim has been involved in many high-scoring games recently, and my Stars vs. Ducks predictions expect this trend to continue.
Read on for my NHL picks for Tuesday, January 12.
Stars vs Ducks best bet: Over 6.5 (-105)
There have been seven or more total goals scored in each of the Anaheim Ducks’ past eight games, a trend driven by multiple factors. First, Anaheim has struggled defensively.
The Ducks rank 30th in expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA/60). Backing up that porous defense is projected starting goaltender Lukas Dostal.
Arguably the coldest goaltender in hockey, Dostal has surrendered four or more goals in each of his past six appearances. He is 0-3-1 over that stretch with a fade-worthy .854 save percentage and a 4.32 goals-against average.
Those struggles will continue against the Dallas Stars, a team Dostal has fared poorly against. Over the past three meetings, he owns a .797 save percentage and a 5.74 goals-against average.
The good news for Anaheim’s netminder is that he should receive plenty of goal support. Entering this matchup, the Ducks rank sixth in expected goals for per 60 minutes (xGF/60).
Meanwhile, the Stars have also been strong offensively, ranking 10th in the same category.
There may not be two better scoring candidates than Dallas’ Jason Robertson and Anaheim’s Cutter Gauthier.
Motivated after missing out on Team USA, Robertson has scored in four of his past six games. Meanwhile, Gauthier leads the Ducks with 20 goals and has scored in three of his five career games against Dallas.
