Edina High School’s Mason West, a selection with the No. 29 overall pick by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2025 NHL Draft, made a dream come true on Friday night: Winning a Minnesota high school football state championship.
The 6-foot-6, 218-pound hockey forward/quarterback completed all seven of his passes for 78 yards and two touchdowns as the Hornets rolled to a 42-35 win over Moorhead for the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) AAAAAA state title. Fellow teammate Chase Bjorgaard was the star on offense, carrying the rock 31 times for 320 yards and scoring six total touchdowns in the game.
Having already led Edina to a MSHSL state championship in high school hockey, West can now add a high school football state crown to his ever growing list of accolades before heading off to the NHL.

“Yes, for sure I wanna win. I have yet to win a football state championship and that was a goal of mine and having the opportunity to achieve that goal would be very special,” West said to Rivals in August. “It would be another dream of mine especially because I have played with all these guys since I was super young. It was be super special to win something with these guys. It’s hard to say it would be over getting drafted but it would definitely be super cool.”
Playing for the Hornets’ hockey team the previous three seasons, West has compiled 114 points (51 goals, 63 assists) in 91 total games.
