A new week begins in the NHL as the young season continues to progress, with the Carolina Hurricanes and Vegas Golden Knights closing out Monday’s five game slate. This should be the best matchup of the night, as we have two legit teams that have combined for a record of 9-0-2.
Both of these teams have made fast starts this season to jump towards the top of their respective conferences, and neither has lost in regulation yet. It is the first of two matchups this season, and you can bet that both organizations will be prepared for the task at hand.
It is hard to pick a winner in this match, as each team is already solidifying themselves as one of the top dogs in the league. However, we are siding with the Vegas Golden Knights on home ice. They are playing in their third-straight game at home, and have won three-straight games in regulation. The vibes are good with this stacked roster.
This will easily be their toughest challenge yet, because Carolina has also proven to be the real deal. However, Carolina is playing in their fourth-straight road game, with two left to go. They have obviously fared great, but in the same breath this is their biggest task as well. Blowing a 3-0 lead (in an eventual win in overtime) in their most recent game does not spark major confidence in their energy levels.
Vegas also has a much more dynamic roster. Acquiring Mitch Marner in the offseason bolstered what was already an incredibly deep forward roster alongside the likes of Jack Eichel, Mark Stone, and Tomas Hertl.
It should be a close game, but the Golden Knights can come out on top in front of what should be a rocking building.
Nikolaj Ehlers was the major off-season acquisition for the Carolina Hurricanes. He is an elite offensive player in the league, but even in Carolina’s success, the star forward has not yet contributed a single point. It is not for a lack of trying though, as he has 18 shots on net (3.6 per game), and the Hurricanes are deploying him at 17:31 per game, which is the most he’s seen in three years.
Ehlers is obviously an offensive threat, as he is near a point per game each season. So far, he has been firing on all cylinders, as he had 5+ shots in three of his past four games.
This is a game where Carolina may be trailing, and they will need their big guys to step up. Ehlers is getting paid a lot of money to contribute, so even if he doesn’t get on the scoresheet, expect him to have lots of shots.
Mark Stone has been a catalyst for the Golden Knights since his arrival in the 2018/19 season. In Stone’s career, he has 647 points in 712 games, and has been at least a point per game in three of his past six seasons. This season, he has come out of the gates blazing.
In just six games, Stone has accumulated 13 points (2.17 points per game). He has been a major piece in Vegas’ hot start, and there is no obvious reason why that would change in this game.
Vegas’ offensive weaponry is some of the best in the league, so whoever Stone finds himself with will give him good chances to either set up or bury goals. This is a major matchup for the Golden Knights where all hands will be on deck.
Expect the captain to be right in the thick of it, helping produce and drive his team to win.
