GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – More than 10,000 Greenville County students were at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena for the Swamp Rabbits’ School Day hockey game against the Florida Everblades on Wednesday.
Officials said the Swamp Rabbits set an all-time franchise record for single-game attendance with 10,852 people, exceeding the previous record of 10,037 from Oct. 12, 2018.
For many students, this was their first introduction to the sport. The special event featured STEM opportunities for students to learn, including the science of hockey.
Learning from the game
Hockey players said there is a lot to learn from the game, including the importance of teamwork, communication and humility. They said it is common to come home after practice or a game with injuries.
While aggression might be the part of the game that sticks out for many people, there is also a lot of respect required when dealing with teammates, coaches and opponents.
The players said they have applied some of their hockey skills in their professional lives as well.
Live coverage
FOX Carolina aired a live Palmetto Sports special presentation at 10 a.m. ahead of the game. Palmetto Sports Director Carmine Gemei, Access Carolina’s Margaret Burnquist and First Alert Chief Meteorologist Kendra Kent joined the coverage before the puck dropped.
The live coverage started at 10 a.m., followed by live game coverage on FOX Carolina.
