SCHENECTADY — In the first period Saturday, the Union women’s hockey team played like it was angry after suffering a 2-1 overtime loss to RPI on Friday. The Garnet Chargers jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the opening 20 minutes, and they appeared to be on their way to a rout.
But games don’t end after a four-goal lead after one period.
RPI battled back to pull within one heading into the third. But Maddie Leaney scored her second goal of the game 51 seconds into the third period to put the Garnet Chargers back on track and earn a 7-5 ECAC Hockey victory over the Engineers at M&T Bank Center, snapping their six-game losing streak.
Union (1-5-0 ECACH, 4 points; 5-7-2 overall) split the weekend series with RPI (1-5-0, 3 points; 2-11-0), but won the conference points battle 4-2.
“Points are always big,” Union head coach Tony Maci said. “You always want to make sure you’re getting as many points on a weekend as possible, especially with the way our league is right now. You know every game’s tight, even up at the top, and anybody can beat anybody, it seems like. So we gotta just try and grab points when we can.”
Union scored three times in a 4:14 span to start the game. Megan Duplantie made it 1-0 at 1:09. Maddie Leanye scored at 4:29, and South Glens Falls native Jill Wills made it 3-0 56 seconds later. RPI head coach Bryan Vines called a timeout and replaced starting goalie Reese Keating, who made 31 saves Friday, with Maelee Ambrass.
Georgia Bailey got the Engineers on the board with a power-play goal at 15:03. But late goals Quinn Dunkle and Karianne Engelbert had the Garnet Chargers up four and feeling good about themselves.
“That’s always a nice way to start a game,” Leaney said. “I think the big thing was just playing how we want to play and setting the standard for the rest of the game.”
“Yesterday was yesterday, and today’s today,’ Willis said. “So we kind of just forgot about yesterday and focused on today.”
That good feeling disappeared in the second period as the Engineers scored three times. Aylah Cioffi and Gracyn Mackay scored power-play goals, with a Juilana Goffredo even-strength goal in between.
Maci didn’t believe his team let up in the second.
“We got caught in some penalty issues,” Maci said. “And you can’t give them opportunities on the power play.”
Leaney restored order with her third-period goal. She was skating down the slot when Duplantie, as she was being knocked down by an RPI player behind the goalie, backhanded the puck to Leaney, who fired it home.
“A goal is a goal,” Leaney said. “I think we needed that for momentum. I think just to get the game back on our side, it was just me who put it in the back of the net, but I think it was a team effort.”
Willis sealed it with an empty-net goal with 1:35 left.
