Here’s why I’m backing a New Jersey puckline bet below in my Canadiens Devils free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
The NHL night slate brings us a good one as the Montreal Canadiens hit the road to face the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Center. Montreal rolls in at 9-4-1, while Jersey sits just a hair behind at 9-4-0.
Both teams have come out swinging early this season — and neither wants to lose momentum now.
Martin St. Louis has his Canadiens playing a confident brand of hockey. Even with a 5-4 loss to Philadelphia last time out, Montreal’s 3-1 division record has them perched atop the Atlantic.
The chemistry between Kirby Dach and rookie Ivan Demidov has been electric, with both looking like legit difference-makers through the first month.
Across the ice, Sheldon Keefe’s Devils are trying to bounce back from a 4-1 stumble against Anaheim.
Despite that hiccup, they’ve been sharp in conference play (4-1) and boast one of the deeper forward groups in the East. Jack Hughes is doing Jack Hughes things again, and New Jersey’s speed remains their biggest weapon.
Last season, the Devils owned this matchup — a 3-0 sweep with an average win margin north of two goals. Expect Montreal to bring a little extra edge into this one. Puck drops at 7:00 PM ET Thursday on ESPN+.

The oddsmakers like New Jersey here, pegging them around -161 on the moneyline. Montreal slides in as the +136 underdog, with the Devils -1.5 (+152) on the puck line.
The total’s set at 6 — a fair number given how both offenses can catch fire fast.
We want to hear from you below! Comments are welcome! Give us your picks for this Montreal Canadiens vs. New Jersey Devils NHL matchup.
Montreal’s been scrappy lately, alternating between wins and heartbreakers. They edged Ottawa 4-3 before that 5-4 loss to Philly, showing flashes of offensive brilliance but also leaving defensive gaps. Dach and Demidov have been their spark plugs — young, fast, and dangerous around the crease.
The Devils, meanwhile, are eager to wash away that Ducks loss. Before that, they throttled the Kings 4-1 and looked like a playoff-caliber team.
A 4-1 conference record and a balanced attack make them tough to fade at home, but Montreal’s offensive depth could push this total north of the line.
New Jersey’s recent form has been uneven, but the firepower’s undeniable. They handled the Kings easily (4-1) before running into a disciplined Anaheim squad.
If they tighten up defensively, they can get right back on track.
Jack Hughes is leading the charge — 10 goals, 6 assists, 16 points in 13 games — and he’s every bit the engine that drives this team. Dawson Mercer’s 8 goals and 6 assists add another layer to a top six that can burn you in waves.
Defensively, the Devils rank 2nd league-wide with 238 blocked shots, showing they’ll sell out to protect the net. Their Achilles’ heel remains puck management — 13th in giveaways, which can swing momentum fast.
Goaltending’s been steady: Jake Allen (5 wins, 179 saves) and Jacob Markstrom (3 wins, 126 saves) form a dependable tandem.
Montreal’s offense has been rolling early — 48 goals (4th in the NHL) and 85 assists (3rd).
The top six has been moving the puck beautifully, especially on the power play, where they’ve cashed in 12 times to rank 4th overall.
They can hit too, ranking 17th in hits (263), but the giveaways have been killer — a league-worst 170. It’s high-risk, high-reward hockey, and so far, it’s worked more than it’s burned them. Defensively, their 215 blocks (8th) show a group willing to sacrifice for the badge.
Sam Montembeault has been the unsung hero in net, racking up 312 saves and keeping Montreal in games when things get messy. They’ve been trading punches lately — a tight win over Ottawa followed by that 5-4 setback to Philly — but the compete level’s legit.
Montreal Canadiens vs. New Jersey Devils bottom line: Expect an up-tempo chess match — Montreal’s offensive creativity versus New Jersey’s relentless speed and structure.
Here is my Devils Canadiens free pick. The Devils have been rock solid at home, and history backs that up. Last season, they swept all 3 meetings with Montreal, outscoring the Canadiens by an average margin of 2.3 goals per game.
That kind of dominance not only reflects their offensive firepower but also establishes a mental edge heading into tonight’s matchup.
Meanwhile, Montreal continues to struggle when they leave home ice. Despite a respectable start to this season, their record against the spread on the road has been underwhelming. Their defensive lapses tend to get exposed by skilled, quick-transition teams like New Jersey — and that’s exactly what the Devils bring.
Given their recent form, home dominance, and historical control of this matchup, the Devils -1.5 on the puckline is the play that makes sense.
What’s more, New Jersey’s puckline success at home adds confidence for bettors — they’ve covered in 4 of their last 5 home wins. With elite scoring depth and a potent power play, the Devils have every edge to skate past the Canadiens comfortably.
