The Washington Capitals head to Madison Square Garden to face off against the New York Rangers for an exciting Sunday night NHL game.
The Metropolitan sides meet for the first time since March 2025, which came down to a close 3-2 OT win at home.
The Rangers played six preseason games, going 2-4 overall before suffering a 3-0 defeat in their home opener against Pittsburgh. They are now rolling a two-game winning streak with their 4-0 victory over the Sabers on Thursday, before crushing the Penguins 6-1 on Saturday.
Adam Fox proved the star of the night with two goals and one assist, while Adam Edstrom, Noah Laba, and Sam Carrick all recorded two assists apiece.
The Capitals ended their six-game preseason with their only loss coming from the Boston Bruins on a 3-1 scoreline. They opened the season at home just six days later against Boston but again fell to a 3-1 defeat.
The Capitals then stuck out a 4-2 victory over the New York Islanders on Saturday, with Aliaksei Protas finishing the night with two goals and one assist.
Martin Fehervary and Ryan Leonard also hit the tally with one goal each.
This clash will be a real test for the Capitals as they aim to close a two-point deficit in the Metro Division over the Rangers, who are riding hot with 10 goals in their last two games.
The Rangers’ only loss this season came in their first game at home against Pittsburgh, and they have yet to net a goal in front of their home crowd.
The Capitals don’t appear to have trouble scoring on the road, netting four this season against the Islanders.
If Washington can replicate a similar offensive mindset against the Rangers, they’re sure to meet the +1.5 spread.
This clash looks to be as even on paper as it gets, with the Rangers (-115) ever so slightly favoured over the Washington Capitals (-105).
A +1.5 puck line of -275 should be more than achievable for the Capitals, considering the five goals they have scored this season already and with the Rangers’ struggling to find the back of the net at home.
While pucks will likely fill the net from both sides, the Rangers are not expected to score more than two and the Capitals have 2.5 goals a game, which means choosing the Under 5.5 goals at +110 appeals.

Capitals’ Sonny Milan was the leading goalscorer in the preseason, although Aliaksei Protas currently leads the team with two in one game against the Islanders.
Alex Ovechkin finished last year’s regular season with 44 goals and 29 assists, and comes in as the strongest candidate to score at +140.
While Dylan Strome also earned 29 goals in the 2024-2025 season, he ended with 53 total assists, and the two offensive masterminds should find a way to link up, with Strome able to at least claim one assist by the end of three periods.
Adam Fox netted two for the Rangers in the most recent showing against the Penguins, but it’s Artemi Panarin, who ended last season with 37 goals and 52 assists, who comes in as New York’s highest anytime goalscorer with +190 odds.
Right-winger Mika Zibanejad is also marked to score at +240 anytime, and the team look very likely to break the ice with their first home goal of the season.
