Here’s why I’m backing the bet below in my Penguins Maple Leafs free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
The NHL season heats up as the Pittsburgh Penguins visit the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena. Pittsburgh’s off to a strong 8-3-2 start under Dan Muse, while Toronto sits at 6-5-1 and still trying to find consistency under Craig Berube.
Both teams are looking for a statement win to build early-season momentum.
The Penguins are coming off a rough 5-2 loss to Winnipeg after cruising past Minnesota 4-1. That split pretty much sums them up right now — flashes of dominance followed by lapses in focus.
They’re .500 in both conference and division play, sitting second in their division, but far from cruising.
Toronto, meanwhile, just beat the Flyers 5-2 after being embarrassed by Columbus 6-3. Their offense looks elite when firing, but defensive breakdowns keep holding them back. Sitting 14th in the conference and 7th in the division isn’t where this roster should be.
Looking back at last season, Toronto took two of three from Pittsburgh, but the margin was razor thin. These two always play tight, high-tempo hockey, and this one should be no different.
Expect fireworks tonight as both sides fight to climb the standings.

The oddsmakers have spoken — Toronto’s a -176 favorite at home, with Pittsburgh sitting at +147 as the underdog. The Leafs are getting respect, but this isn’t a lock by any stretch. Both teams have been volatile, and that keeps bettors guessing.
We want to hear from you below! Comments are welcome! Give us your picks for this Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Toronto Maple Leafs NHL matchup.
Pittsburgh’s recent form is all over the place. They handled Minnesota but followed up with that flat effort versus Winnipeg. Toronto’s no more reliable — they bounced the Flyers but stumbled badly against Columbus. Consistency hasn’t been anyone’s strong suit here.
Last year’s meetings were tight, with Toronto winning two of three, and both sides averaging nearly identical goal differentials. In short, buckle up.
This matchup feels like another 60-minute coin flip.
The Leafs can flat-out score. They rank 5th in goals (43) and 5th in assists (76), firing 354 shots to sit 13th league-wide. When they’re in rhythm, few teams can match their offensive flow.
Defensively, they’re showing bite — 286 hits (9th) and 194 blocks (11th). That balance of physicality and structure is what Berube’s preaching, even if execution still lags.
Recent form paints the usual picture: hot and cold. They smoked Philly 5-2, then let Columbus hang six on them. Still, they rebounded with a gritty 4-3 win over Calgary, proving this team can respond when poked.
Auston Matthews and John Tavares continue to be the heartbeat. Tavares leads with 16 points in 12 games, and Matthews adds 9.
Between the pipes, Anthony Stolarz has been steady with 234 saves in 9 outings — no shutouts yet, but plenty of composure under fire.
The Penguins are every bettor’s mystery box right now. They’ve beaten Minnesota and St. Louis but have stumbled against Winnipeg, Philly, and Columbus. Their loss to the Jets — scoring just 2 while surrendering 5 — exposed a few cracks in the armor.
Sidney Crosby is still the engine, leading the way with 9 goals and 7 assists through 13 games. Evgeni Malkin’s been the setup man, piling up 15 assists to lead the team.
Depth’s not an issue either — Justin Brazeau and Anthony Mantha have 6 goals apiece, keeping defenses honest.
Defensively, Erik Karlsson’s made his presence felt with 15 blocks, helping Pittsburgh rank 3rd in the NHL with 225 total. But the Penguins are just 28th in hits (218), suggesting they could use a bit more sandpaper.
Goaltending remains a coin toss too. Tristan Jarry’s 5 wins and 168 saves in 6 starts are solid, but he’s lacked that game-stealing performance. Arturs Silovs, with 200 saves in 7 appearances, has battled hard but is also seeking that first shutout.
Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Toronto Maple Leafs bottom line: Both clubs are searching for consistency, but Toronto’s firepower and home ice should give them the upper hand — if their defense doesn’t cave first.
Here is my Penguins Maple Leafs free pick. The Pittsburgh Penguins enter this matchup as underdogs, but that’s exactly where the value lies. With an 8-3-2 record, they’ve shown they can hang with any team, and their balanced play on both ends of the ice has been a major factor in their early success.
Toronto’s inconsistency in conference play — a 4-5 record — raises real concerns about their ability to put away disciplined teams like Pittsburgh.
The Penguins’ defense has quietly been steady, ranking 15th in goals against. That kind of structure can frustrate a Leafs offense that often relies on high-risk plays. While the Maple Leafs have won 3 of their last 5, they’ve had issues closing out tight games, and that’s where the Pens’ veteran core can capitalize.
Because of their proven ability to compete with top-tier teams, the Penguins hold tremendous value on the moneyline here.
Additionally, the Penguins have been effective in divisional games, playing a strong, physical brand that travels well on the road. Toronto’s defense still leaks chances, and if Sidney Crosby’s line finds space early, it could tilt momentum fast.
Ultimately, with the Leafs’ defensive lapses and the Pens’ steady start, this is a spot where backing the underdog makes sense.
I’m taking Pittsburgh straight up on the moneyline at +147 — and I like their chances to cash.
