NEW YORK (AP) — Two of the NHL’s biggest heavyweights dropped the gloves for a knockout, drag-out, old-school hockey fight at center ice at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night. The bout also knocked one of the combatants out of the game.
Matt Rempe of the New York Rangers challenged Ryan Reaves of the San Jose Sharks to a fight after Reaves knocked Juuso Parssinen off his skates. Rempe likely also wanted to get his team going after falling behind by allowing a goal less than two minutes in.

The first game in the five-match series was washed out in Canberra on Wednesday. The second match has attracted a capacity crowd Friday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Four days after an impressive 34-10 win at Atlanta, the Miami Dolphins reverted to the norm that has defined their season. A 14-6 halftime deficit ballooned to a 28-6 home loss against the Baltimore Ravens Thursday night. Dolphins’ fans jeered as the team’s record fell to 2-7. Self-inflicted wounds became the overriding narrative. A turnover inside their red zone that the Ravens cashed in with their first touchdown, defenders colliding with each other resulting in a touchdown pass and a false start penalty that stalled a first half drive were the among the notable mistakes.
San Antonio center Victor Wembanyama released years of frustration for this storied franchise with a fiery scream after the Spurs beat the Miami Heat on Thursday. San Antonio beat Miami 107-101 and set a franchise record by opening the season 5-0. Winning five in a row holds more than historical significance for this youthful roster. It’s proof the Spurs are trending in the right direction after years of record futility.

Will Smith and Tyler Toffoli then scored late in the second period to break the game open. Dawson Mercer scored two power-play goals for the Devils, who have lost two straight games to open their four-game trip.
Milwaukee Bucks guard Ryan Rollins vowed that the contract he signed before the season wouldn’t cause him to lower the tenacity that had enabled him to earn that payday. That three-year, $12 million deal is looking like more of a bargain for the Bucks with each passing day. Rollins moved into Milwaukee’s starting lineup after Kevin Porter Jr. sprained his left ankle in the Bucks’ season opener. Rollins has been capitalizing on the opportunity ever since. He followed up a 25-point performance against New York by scoring a career-high 32 points in a 120-110 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

Igor Shesterkin made 33 for the Rangers, while Stuart Skinner made 30 stops for the Oilers.
Mississippi coach Lane Kiffin says South Carolina’s LaNorris Sellers might be the best of a long list of impressive quarterbacks to face the seventh-ranked Rebels this season. Kiffin says Sellers’ “size-speed ratio is off the charts” and that he’s hard to bring down. The Gamecocks, who visit Ole Miss on Saturday night, are on a three-game losing streak. They’ve been plagued by near-misses. Three of their losses have been by 10 points or fewer. The most recent was a 29-22 home loss to Alabama after South Carolina led by eight points late in the fourth quarter.
