The Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Columbus Blue Jackets matchup goes down Wednesday, October 29, 2025, at 7:30 PM ET from Nationwide Arena. Viewers can tune in on NHL Network as two middle-of-the-pack Eastern Conference squads scrap for positioning before November hits.
Toronto enters this one at 5-4-1 under new coach Craig Berube, who’s still trying to tighten up the defensive zone chaos. The Leafs sit eighth in the East but have been hot and cold all month.
Their latest 4-3 victory over Calgary showed what they can do when the offense clicks, especially with Matthew Knies and Max Domi heating up.
Meanwhile, Columbus is quietly playing solid hockey. The Blue Jackets sit at 5-4-0 and look like a team starting to believe in themselves. Head coach Dean Evason has them competing hard every night, and recent wins over Buffalo and Pittsburgh have boosted confidence.
Zach Werenski and Miles Wood have become steady tone-setters for a club that’s finding its stride.
Looking back, the Jackets took two of three meetings against Toronto last season. That gives them a small psychological edge heading into this one.
With both clubs hovering around the .500 mark, the stakes are real — and so is the pressure to string together wins before the standings start to separate.

We want to hear from you below! Comments are welcome! Give us your picks for this Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Columbus Blue Jackets NHL matchup.
Recently, the Leafs have been inconsistent, alternating wins and losses. Still, when Knies, Domi, and the top six get rolling, Toronto can hang with anybody. Their offensive rhythm might be the key here if they can stay disciplined in their own end.
Conversely, the Blue Jackets have taken four of their last five and are playing fast, confident hockey. Their balance between physicality and shot creation has carried them in close games.
If they control tempo early, they’ll have every chance to grab another statement win at home.
To begin with, Columbus has been strong offensively. They rank 11th in goals scored (28) and 15th in assists (45), showing steady contribution throughout the lineup. On top of that, they sit sixth in total shots on goal (302), proving they’re not afraid to pepper opposing goalies.
Defensively, they’ve been even better. Columbus ranks fifth in goals against (26) thanks to solid positioning and quality goaltending from Elvis Merzlikins. He’s already stacked 266 saves and three wins in four starts, giving the team a backbone when things get tight.
In addition, the Jackets’ momentum has been real. They’ve captured four of their last five, riding steady two-way play from Werenski and Miles Wood. Kirill Marchenko leads with nine points in nine games, while Dmitri Voronkov’s five goals have given them reliable secondary scoring.
Altogether, this is a team that’s trending in the right direction.
Toronto, on the other hand, remains one of the NHL’s most potent offensive squads. They sit fifth in both goals (35) and assists (61), showing plenty of chemistry up front.
They’ve also fired 291 shots on goal — good for tenth in the league — proving their offense is rarely the issue.
Even so, their defensive play has been shaky. The Leafs are seventh in hits (242) and 12th in blocks (153), but their giveaways remain a problem, ranking 23rd with 173. If they can clean that up, their win total will climb in a hurry.
Between the pipes, Anthony Stolarz has done what he can, racking up 203 saves in eight games. However, allowing 26 goals shows he’s not getting much help from his defense. Cayden Primeau, meanwhile, has been perfect in limited action with two wins and 49 stops.
In short, this is a gut-check game for Toronto. They can’t afford to keep floating around the middle of the pack.
For Columbus, another strong effort here could signal they’re more than just an early-season surprise.
Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Columbus Blue Jackets bottom line: this matchup feels like a coin flip with goals on deck. Toronto has the firepower, but Columbus has the form.
Here is my Maple Leafs Blue Jackets free pick. The Blue Jackets have been absolutely lighting it up lately, finding the back of the net at will. They’ve scored four or more goals in four of their last five games, and that kind of consistency can’t be ignored when evaluating totals.
Their top line has been buzzing, creating high-danger chances on nearly every shift, and they’ve proven they can keep up with any offense in the league.
Meanwhile, the Maple Leafs have also been involved in their fair share of shootouts. They’ve gone over the total in three of their last five contests, each of those games finishing with at least seven combined goals.
Their power play remains elite, and their transition game continues to generate breakaway opportunities and odd-man rushes.
Given both teams’ recent scoring trends, the over 6.5 looks like a high-value play.
Both defenses have shown vulnerability—Toronto’s blue line has struggled with turnovers, and Columbus has allowed far too many second chance shots in front of goal. When you mix two teams with elite offensive talent but inconsistent defensive execution, goals tend to come in bunches.
My system says to take the over 6.5 with confidence.
