Here’s why I’m backing an OVER bet below in my Capitals Blue Jackets free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
As the NHL regular season gets rolling, the Washington Capitals head to Columbus to take on the Blue Jackets. Washington sits at 5-2-0 and looks dialed in early, while Columbus is an even 3-3-0 and trying to shake off their inconsistency inside the Metropolitan Division.
So far, the Capitals have handled business. They’re 3-1 against conference opponents and coming off a dominant win over the Seattle Kraken by three goals.
Under head coach Spencer Carbery, Washington’s mix of physical play and quick transition offense has made them a problem for anyone not named Florida or New York.
On the flip side, Columbus remains a tough read. Dean Evason’s crew just smoked the Dallas Stars in a four-goal rout, but they’ve also been burned by defensive lapses that keep showing up at the worst times. They’re sitting eighth in the division and badly need a statement win to stay relevant early on.
Recent history tilts toward Washington, though. These two split their season series last year, but Columbus actually outscored them overall.
With both teams chasing consistency, this one could tell us a lot about which side’s early record is for real.

Oddsmakers are leaning slightly toward Washington, sitting around -117 on the moneyline. That’s no surprise considering their hot start and balanced scoring attack. The puck line has the Caps -1.5 at +205, which suggests there’s room for another strong performance if their top six stays hot.
Columbus enters as the slight underdog at -104 and +1.5 on the puck line (-260). They’ll need to ride that Dallas win for confidence, but their division struggles and spotty defense haven’t inspired bettors so far.
In their last five, Washington has been steady with wins over Minnesota and Seattle, plus a narrow loss to Vancouver. Columbus has been a mixed bag — strong against Tampa and Dallas, weak against Colorado.
With both clubs trying to build early traction, this one sets up as a sneaky-important October matchup.
The Blue Jackets have been all over the map offensively. They rank 12th in goals with 19 and sit seventh in power-play goals, which shows flashes of life. Wins over Dallas and Tampa have started to build momentum, but it’s still fragile.
Kirill Marchenko has been the spark, piling up five goals and two assists in six games. Boone Jenner continues to grind out production with six points of his own, giving Columbus at least a fighting chance most nights.
Defensively, there’s work to do. Ranking 23rd in hits and blocks, they simply haven’t been physical enough to keep top teams honest. Still, 86 blocks isn’t nothing — it’s kept them afloat in a few tight games.
Goaltenders Elvis Merzlikins and Jet Greaves have been solid when it matters, combining for nearly 180 saves so far.
Washington’s offense has been humming. They rank 10th in goals (21) and ninth in both assists (39) and shots (224).
Their ability to roll four lines and keep pressure on is a big reason they’ve jumped out early in the standings.
Tom Wilson’s been a tone-setter. With 10 points in seven games, plus 22 hits, he’s mixing scoring touch with his trademark edge. That’s the type of leadership you need on the road.
Defensively, the Caps have held steady — 10th in hits (176) and 22nd in blocks (88). Not elite, but respectable enough. The real backbone, though, has been in net.
Logan Thompson owns four wins and over 100 saves already, while Charlie Lindgren has been more than serviceable in his two starts.
Washington Capitals vs. Columbus Blue Jackets bottom line: expect a scrappy, back-and-forth tilt with playoff-style intensity.

Here is my Capitals Blue Jackets free pick. To begin with, the Washington Capitals have been lighting up scoreboards lately, with three of their last five contests soaring past six total goals. Their fast-paced offense keeps things exciting, albeit their defensive inconsistencies have allowed opponents to stay in games.
Meanwhile, the Columbus Blue Jackets have mirrored that pattern, as two of their last five games have hit seven or more goals. Moreover, their defense has been shaky, and against a Capitals team that thrives on offensive pressure, that could easily spell another high-scoring affair.
By and large, both clubs possess firepower up front but remain vulnerable in their own zones. The stage is perfectly set for an entertaining matchup where neither side wants to slow the tempo.
For this reason, the Over 6 stands out as the sharpest angle for bettors tonight.
All things considered, this should be a free-flowing game filled with plenty of scoring chances on both ends. Expect both the Capitals and Blue Jackets to keep the lamp busy and push this total comfortably over the number.
