Matt Rempe of the New York Rangers challenged Ryan Reaves of the San Jose Sharks to a fight after Reaves knocked Juuso Parssinen off his skates. Rempe likely also wanted to get his team going after falling behind by allowing a goal less than two minutes in.

Sidney Crosby scores two goals and adds an assist as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Florida Panthers 5-3. Crosby now has five goals in his last four games, marking his longest scoring streak since the 2021-22 season. Erik Karlsson contributes two assists, while Ben Kindel, Rickard Rakell, and Connor Dewar also score for Pittsburgh. Brad Marchand scores twice for Florida, with Sam Reinhart adding another goal. This game marks the first time Crosby and Marchand both score two or more goals in the same game. Crosby is now two points away from reaching 1,700 career points with one franchise.
Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Alex Vesia was not with the team one day before Game 1 of the World Series because of a family matter. Manager Dave Roberts said the defending champions were still working through how the left-hander’s absence would impact their World Series roster, which must be finalized Friday morning. Vesia went 4-2 with a 3.02 ERA in 68 regular-season games. He is 2-0 with a 3.86 ERA in seven postseason appearances.
Miami Dolphins star receiver Tyreek Hill hasn’t yet decided if he’s done playing football after suffering a season-ending knee injury against the New York Jets on Sept 29. In an interview on the podcast of Terron Armstead, Hill’s former Dolphins teammate, Hill said he’ll make up his mind about his career at some point. For now, his focus is on recovering from surgery he had a couple of weeks ago to repair significant damage to his left knee, including a torn anterior cruciate ligament. The Dolphins placed him on season-ending injured reserve on Oct. 1.
No. 1 UConn’s season opener against No. 20 Louisville that was supposed to be played at Ramstein Air Base in Germany on Nov. 4 has been moved to the Naval Academy because of the government shutdown. Louisville coach Jeff Walz said his team was going to try and see some of the museums in the area and make the most of the trip to Annapolis. ESPN made the call to move the game.
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Despite a bone bruise in his left knee, Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. plans to start against the Dolphins at 1 p.m. Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
The New York Mets have signed left-hander Richard Lovelady to a one-year contract paying $1 million while in the major leagues and $350,000 while in the minors. The 30-year-old had a 6.30 ERA in eight appearances with the Mets this season. The veteran reliever also pitched in two games with Toronto, allowing four runs in 1 2/3 innings. Lovelady signed with New York in June. He was designated for assignment by the Mets three times over the last part of the season. Lovelady also had a 2.08 ERA in 16 games with Triple-A Syracuse this year.
MIAMI — The Heat won’t have guard Terry Rozier after his arrest Thursday, and the team won’t be getting any immediate cap relief to replace him, either.
Fresh off an open date — and with the roster a lot healthier than it was earlier this month — the Baltimore Ravens host the Chicago Bears on Sunday. At 1-5, Baltimore is already in quite a hole, but after Chicago the schedule eases up significantly. The question is: At what point might it be too late? The Bears arrive on a four-game winning streak. Baltimore star Lamar Jackson missed the past two games with a hamstring injury. He practiced this week but was limited.
Two of the NHL’s biggest heavyweights dropped the gloves for a knockout, drag-out, old-school hockey fight at center ice at Madison Square Garden. Matt Rempe of the New York Rangers challenged Ryan Reaves of the San Jose Sharks to a fight after Reaves knocked Juuso Parssinen off his skates. Reaves’ helmet fell off, and then he was able to knock off Rempe’s with his next right. The two exchanged blows for more than 20 seconds with the crowd buzzing. Rempe left the game with an upper-body injury, and the Rangers said he would not return.
TORONTO — They did not come charging out of the dugout. They did not mob one another with a dog pile by the mound.
John Schneider is waiting for Shohei Ohtani to return some items to the Toronto Blue Jays. Before signing a $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Ohtani met with Blue Jays officials in December 2023. Ohtani will lead off for the Dodgers against the Blue Jays in the World Series on Friday. Schneider joked about Ohtani returning a Blue Jays hat and jacket taken during their meeting. Ohtani helped the Dodgers win last year’s title. The Blue Jays used their budget to sign Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to a $500 million contract.
ORLANDO, Fla. — A pair of long-running federal gambling investigations into “tens of millions of dollars in fraud and theft and robbery” led to the arrests Thursday of Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier and dozens of others, including two former NBA players and New York mafia members.
Just seven points separate the Seattle Seahawks from a perfect start to the season. The Seahawks enter their bye with a 5-2 record after beating the Houston Texans 27-19 last Monday night. They are 3-0 away from home and 2-2 at Lumen Field because of a pair of last-minute, one-possession losses to the San Francisco 49ers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Coach Mike Macdonald described it as “cool” that the Seahawks have yet to play a complete game. Seattle’s offense has improved under first-year quarterback Sam Darnold and coordinator Klint Kubiak, while third-year receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba has become the top wideout in the NFL.
Sean Payton didn’t get to face his former quarterback Russell Wilson last week, but he’ll see plenty of ex-running back Javonte Williams on Sunday. Williams is thriving in Dallas after signing with the Cowboys following his departure from Denver in the offseason. He aims to help the Cowboys end Denver’s eight-game home winning streak. Williams has tied his career high with seven total touchdowns in just seven weeks. The Broncos are also enjoying a resurgence, leading the AFC West with a 5-2 record. Both teams are excited for the reunion, with players looking forward to the matchup.
Rookie Trey Yesavage will start Friday night’s World Series opener for the Toronto Blue Jays against the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers and Blake Snell, giving the 22-year-old more postseason starts than career regular-season outings. Yesavage debuted on Sept. 15 and will be making his fourth postseason start. Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Thursday he wasn’t ready to announce his Game 2 starter from among Kevin Gausman, Max Scherzer and Shane Bieber.
TORONTO — The Dodgers announced Thursday that reliever Alex Vesia is away from the team as he and his wife “navigate a deeply personal family matter,” and manager Dave Roberts said his availability for the World Series is uncertain.
It’s difficult to identify long-term building blocks on Jacksonville’s roster. When coach Liam Coen took the job in January, he pointed to a talented foundation that included quarterback Trevor Lawrence, receiver Brian Thomas Jr., cornerback Tyson Campbell and defensive ends Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker. None of them has played particularly well through seven games, and Campbell already has been traded. The remaining four will need to deliver at a much higher rate for the Jaguars (4-3) to regroup from consecutive losses and gain ground on Indianapolis in the AFC South following a bye week.
The Detroit Lions have a bye this week. That might be the only thing that can slow Jahmyr Gibbs. He is coming off the best game of his career, accounting for 218 yards and two touchdowns in Detroit’s 24-19 win over Tampa Bay on Monday night. Gibbs became the first in franchise history and 10th in the NFL to have at least 135 yards rushing, 80 yards receiving and two rushing scores in a game. The Lions and opponents trying to defend Gibbs get a break this week until their next game on Nov. 2 at home against Minnesota.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is challenging U.S. President Donald Trump to make a friendly wager on the outcome of the World Series between the Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers. But Carney said Trump hasn’t returned his call yet on the potential bet. “He doesn’t like to lose. He hasn’t called. He hasn’t returned my call yet on the bet so I’m ready. We’re ready to make a bet with the U.S.,” he said. Carney predicts the Blue Jays will win the best of seven series in six games.
Matthew Stafford has become the ninth-leading passer in NFL history despite finishing in the top 10 in MVP balloting only once in his 17-year career. That could change this season for Stafford, who is playing superbly for the Los Angeles Rams during their 5-2 start heading into their bye week. After throwing five TD passes during the Rams’ 35-7 thrashing of the Jaguars in London even without the injured Nacua, Stafford entered Los Angeles’ bye leading the NFL with 17 TD passes against just two interceptions. His 1,866 yards passing are third in the league, while his 109.3 passer rating is also third among QBs who have played the whole season.
Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson is day to day leading up to Sunday’s game against the New York Jets. The All-Pro has been limited in practice this week. His availability will significantly impact the Bengals’ defensive strategy. Hendrickson, who led the NFL in sacks in 2024, has four sacks in six games this season. Last week, the Bengals’ defense struggled without him, recording no sacks in a win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Manny Pacquiao’s son is set to make his professional boxing debut Nov. 29 on a card that his Hall of Fame father’s company is promoting. Jimuel Pacquiao will face Brendan Lally, who is set to make his pro debut, in the co-main event at Pechanga Resort Casino in Temecula, California. The fight was announced Thursday by Manny Pacquiao Promotions, which unveiled the full card for its U.S. debut. Manny Pacquiao won titles in a record eight weight classes and was enshrined in the International Boxing Hall of Fame in June. He fell just short of regaining a title at age 46 a month later, with Mario Barrios retaining the WBC welterweight championship by majority draw.
Josh Allen aims to maintain his perfect post-bye record when the Buffalo Bills face the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. The Bills started strong this season but stumbled with two consecutive losses before their week off. Allen believes the break helped the team reset. Meanwhile, the Panthers have turned their season around with three straight wins. They now trailing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers by one game in the NFC South. Andy Dalton might start for Carolina because Bryce Young is dealing with a sprained ankle. The Bills could see defensive reinforcements with Michael Hoecht and Larry Ogunjobi returning from suspensions.
Here’s a look back at Week 7’s action and fantasy advice for the week ahead:
Memphis coach Penny Hardaway has added longtime NBA assistant Roy Rogers as an assistant to fill out his staff for this season. Hardaway also brought in Josh Townsend as the Tigers’ new director of scouting in additions announced Thursday. Rogers was a first-round NBA draft pick in 1996 by the then-Vancouver Grizzlies out of Alabama. He spent the past four seasons as an assistant coach for the Portland Trail Blazers. He also has been an assistant with the Clippers, Chicago, Houston, Washington, Brooklyn, Detroit and Boston. This will be Rogers’ first time coaching in the college ranks.
Aaron Rodgers is set to face Green Bay for the first time when the Steelers host the Packers. Rodgers won four MVPs and a Super Bowl during his 18 years in Green Bay before being traded away in 2023. Rodgers has expressed no bitterness over his departure, emphasizing his love for the organization and his successor, Jordan Love. Rodgers and Love remain friends, often exchanging ideas and observations about common opponents via text. The game finds both teams in first place in their respective divisions, though the Steelers are smarting after being upset on the road last week in Cincinnati.
The Chiefs and Commanders are set for a Monday night clash. The Chiefs remain Super Bowl contenders, with Patrick Mahomes leading the charge. He has thrown for 1,800 yards and 14 touchdowns. The Commanders are struggling, having lost three of their last four games. Quarterback Jayden Daniels is injured, so Marcus Mariota may start. The Chiefs have turned their season around, winning three of their last four. Washington’s defense is giving up big plays, and the Commanders often have fallen behind early in games. And the Chiefs are coming off a 31-0 blowout of the Raiders, their first shutout since before Andy Reid arrived in Kansas City.
The head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers and a player for the Miami Heat have been arrested along with more than 30 other people in a takedown of two sprawling gambling operations that authorities said leaked inside information about NBA athletes and rigged poker games backed by Mafia families. Portland coach Chauncey Billups was charged Thursday with participating in a conspiracy to fix high-stakes card games tied to La Cosa Nostra organized crime families that cheated unsuspecting gamblers out of at least $7 million. Heat guard Terry Rozier was accused in a separate scheme of exploiting private information about players to win bets on NBA games.
TAMPA, Fla. — USF women’s basketball coach Jose Fernandez, who led the Bulls to unprecedented success during his quarter-century tenure, is leaving for a WNBA head coaching opportunity, reportedly with the Dallas Wings.
BOSTON — VJ Edgecombe was unflappable 10 hours before making his NBA debut.
Authorities say an indicted poker cheating ring involving pro sports figures and the mafia used a series of high-tech tactics in the scam. They included shuffling machines that could determine who held what cards and sent that information someone off-site who shared it with a player known as “the quarterback.” They could signal the other players at the table how to proceed. The organizers lured wealthy victims with the chance to play with pro athletes in posh New York spots. Authorities say other tactics used were an X-ray table that could determine who held what cards, and cameras hidden in the trays that held players’ chips.
The New York Giants have found a spark with rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, who replaced Russell Wilson after an 0-3 start. Dart led the Giants to a surprising victory over the Super Bowl champion Eagles on Oct. 9. Last weekend, the Giants became the first NFL team in over two decades to blow an 18-point lead in the final six minutes and lose. The Eagles regrouped to beat the Vikings and improve to 5-2. The Giants will face a Philadelphia team this time that’s at full strength after the Eagles were hampered by injuries in the loss to their division rival.
Dan Wilson has shed his playoff mustache after the Seattle Mariners were eliminated by Toronto in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series. The manager says he is not sure “how long the sting’s going to last.” Much went right for the Mariners on the way to their first AL West title since 2001. But they remain in search of the team’s first World Series berth. Catcher Cal Raleigh became the seventh player in major league history to hit 60 homers in a season, making a strong case for AL MVP in his first season after signing a $105 million, six-year contract.
Los Angeles Times NFL writer Sam Farmer examines the matchups and makes his predictions for Week 8 of the NFL season.
MIAMI — Inter Miami fans on Thursday got the news they had been anticipating for months: Lionel Messi signed a new contract through 2028 and will finish his storied career in a pink No. 10 uniform.
An indictment says gambling money flowed after NBA player Terry Rozier told a pal that he would be exiting early from a game with the Charlotte Hornets in 2023. Rozier and others are charged with conspiracy. The indictment says bettors who placed so-called prop bets cashed in when Rozier’s playing time and points were well below average. Rozier is charged with conspiracy. His lawyer says Rozier is “not a gambler” and “looks forward to winning this fight.” Rozier now plays for the Miami Heat.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are looking to prolong their recent dominance over their NFC South rival New Orleans Saints. The Saints have dominated the series historically, winning 40 of 67 meetings in the regular season and playoffs. New Orleans also is 21-13 against Tampa Bay in games played in New Orleans. But the Bucs have won five of the past six overall and can match their longest winning streak in series history at three by beating the Saints in the Superdome on Sunday. Tampa Bay enters the game atop the NFC South at 5-2 while the Saints have the worst record in the NFC after falling to 1-6 last Sunday in Chicago.
No athletes from Russia or Belarus will qualify for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Paralympics despite the International Paralympic Committee’s recent vote to reinstate them. The IPC in September lifted partial suspensions of Russia and Belarus but said Thursday it has received confirmation from each sport’s governing body that “in practice, no athletes from the two nations are likely to qualify for March’s Games.” The sports’ governing bodies ultimately are responsible “for determining the qualification pathway for its sport, as well as the eligibility of athletes to compete in those qualification pathway competitions,” the IPC added.
NASCAR has returned to court after two failed days of mediation in an antitrust case filed by two race teams, including one owned by Michael Jordan. The case centers on NASCAR’s attempt to maintain its counterclaim against 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports. The teams allege NASCAR is a monopoly. The dispute involves the charter system, which guarantees a car a spot in the field and revenue each season. The case is scheduled for a Dec. 1 court date. The teams argue the revenue sharing is unfair and demand a larger share.
