Here’s why I’m backing the OVER bet below in my Canadiens Flames free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
As the NHL regular season gets rolling, the Montreal Canadiens head west to face the Calgary Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome. The Canadiens, led by Martin St. Louis, have stormed out of the gate with a 5-2 record.
Meanwhile, the Flames are floundering under Ryan Huska, limping into this one with a 1-6 start that’s raised some early alarms in Calgary.
Currently, Montreal sits second in the Eastern Atlantic Division with a 2-2 conference mark.
They’re coming off a solid win against the Buffalo Sabres, which helped extend their early-season momentum. On the other hand, Calgary’s sitting dead last in the Western Pacific, holding a rough 1-3 division record and searching for a spark.
In recent action, the Canadiens followed a tight loss to the Rangers with that bounce-back win over Buffalo.
They’ve been winning the close ones — a good sign for a young team learning to close games. The Flames, however, can’t say the same. They’ve dropped several in a row, including a frustrating 2-1 defeat against Winnipeg that summed up their scoring woes.
While the Flames took both meetings in 2025, this matchup feels different.
Montreal’s confidence is trending up, Calgary’s is sinking fast, and fans will find out tonight which version of each team shows up.

According to oddsmakers, the Canadiens are slight favorites at -122, signaling trust in their early-season form. The Flames sit at +102, a number that shows little faith in a turnaround just yet.
The puck line leans Montreal’s way too — Canadiens -1.5 pays +200, while Calgary +1.5 costs a steep -254.
In their last five, Montreal has been grinding out wins, highlighted by a 4-2 victory over Buffalo and a 3-2 edge on Nashville. Their ability to finish games late has been key. Conversely, the Flames keep finding new ways to lose tight ones, most recently that 1-2 stumble versus Winnipeg.
Head-to-head, Calgary dominated last season’s meetings, but current form suggests the Canadiens have flipped the script.
With Montreal’s offensive rhythm and Calgary’s defensive leaks, bettors might want to lean toward the Habs in this one.
We want to hear from you below! Comments are welcome! Give us your picks for this Montreal Canadiens vs. Calgary Flames NHL matchup.
To put it bluntly, the Calgary Flames are in a rut. They’ve dropped five straight, capped by that loss to the Jets, and confidence is fading fast inside the Saddledome.
Still, there are glimmers of fight. They rank fifth in total hits (180), showing their physical edge hasn’t disappeared. They’re also sixth in power-play goals (4), proving they can still convert when given the chance.
Nazem Kadri leads the club with four assists through seven games — though he’s still searching for his first goal.
Rookie Matt Coronato’s two goals have been a bright spot, but the offense needs far more punch.
Between the pipes, Dustin Wolf’s been busy, logging 142 saves in six starts but only one win to show for it. Calgary needs to tighten up in front of him — or this skid will stretch.
Meanwhile, Montreal’s stats pop off the page. They rank second in goals (25) and third in assists (42), an early sign their offense is humming. They’re also 13th in total shots (183) — plenty of volume to back those scoring numbers.
Defensively, they’ve been sturdy too, ranking ninth in blocked shots (107) and 12th in hits (144). The one concern? Giveaways. Their 90 turnovers could bite them if they don’t clean that up.
In goal, Jakub Dobes has been sharp, posting a perfect 3-0 record with 77 saves, while Sam Montembeault has gone 2-2 despite giving up 13 goals.
Neither has a shutout yet — but that might change soon with how Montreal’s defense is trending.
Lastly, their recent stretch includes wins over Buffalo, Nashville, Seattle, and Chicago, plus that close loss to the Rangers.
Cole Caufield’s been doing Cole Caufield things, Nick Suzuki’s setting the table, and this young Habs group looks dangerous.
Montreal Canadiens vs. Calgary Flames bottom line: Montreal’s momentum should carry them here — unless Calgary suddenly remembers how to score.
Here is my Canadiens Flames free pick. The Montreal Canadiens have come out firing early this season, scoring at least 3 goals in 4 of their last 5 games.
Their young core has been generating plenty of chances, and their top line looks confident moving the puck with speed and precision.
Conversely, the Calgary Flames have been in a serious funk offensively, failing to score more than 2 goals in any of their last 5 contests.
What’s even more concerning is their defensive play — they’ve given up 3 or more goals in every one of those games, which has made it nearly impossible to stay competitive.
With Montreal’s offense clicking and Calgary’s defense leaking, this matchup screams goals.
Additionally, both teams’ recent trends point directly toward a high-scoring outcome. The Canadiens have been pushing the pace, while the Flames’ inability to close gaps in their own zone continues to haunt them.
Considering all of this, betting the Over 6 feels like the right play in what could turn into a back-and-forth shootout.
jQuery(document).ready(function($){

$("#drawer"+thetarget).slideToggle('fast', 'swing', function(){ //alert("The slideToggle() method is finished!"); }); }); });
