BEMIDJI — Bemidji hockey fans have seen enough of Jayson Shaugabay.
The Minnesota Duluth forward began his reign of dominance on Nov. 26, 2019. No, Shaugabay is not a sixth-year senior. He’s a Warroad High School graduate who spent his prep career racking up points at one of the state’s most prolific Class A programs.

Shaugabay scored two goals and two assists in his first varsity hockey game as a freshman. It was against Bemidji High School.
He played seven games for the Warriors against the Lumberjacks before he graduated. In total, Shaugabay had nine goals and 12 assists. He recorded at least a point in every game and was only held without a goal once.
But college hockey is a new beast, right?
Wrong.
The fourth-round Tampa Bay Lightning picks in the 2023 NHL Draft played 109 games with the Green Bay Gamblers in the USHL — scoring 22 goals and 55 assists — before enrolling at UMD. Since then, he’s played four games against the Bemidji State men’s hockey team.
Shaugabay has proved to be more than just a worthy advisory to the Beavers. With his six goals and five assists in four games against BSU, he’s catapulted himself into a Beaver-killer status.
Shaugabay has played in 11 games against Bemidji hockey teams since 2019. He’s amassed 15 goals and 17 assists for 33 total points. He plays on a line with sophomores and Hermantown brothers Zam and Max Plante. The trio has combined for 11 goals and 16 assists in four games against BSU dating back to Oct. 5, 2024.

“We just played really well this weekend, I don’t know what it was,” Shaugabay told the Duluth News Tribune on Saturday. “I think that’s the standard we want to hold for our line because we know we can do that every weekend. We work really well together and those two are obviously very elite.”
