Here’s why I’m backing the RANGERS to pay out in my Wild Rangers free pick & gambling prediction for this NHL matchup.
The New York Rangers and Minnesota Wild face off at Madison Square Garden as the NHL regular season rolls on. The Rangers enter at 3-3-1 and look to build momentum at home, while the Wild, sitting at 2-4-1, are desperate to spark a turnaround before falling further in the standings.
Under head coach John Hynes, Minnesota has struggled early, ranking 13th in the Western Conference.
They’ve dropped recent games to the Philadelphia Flyers, Washington Capitals, and Dallas Stars, though a gritty win over the Los Angeles Kings offered a brief bright spot.
The Wild will need stronger defensive play to steady their start.
On the flip side, Mike Sullivan’s Rangers are 8th in the Eastern Conference and still finding rhythm. They recently edged the Montreal Canadiens but have been inconsistent, suffering losses to the Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers.
The Rangers’ flashes of high-end offense have been countered by defensive lapses that keep them from stringing wins together.

New York dominated last season’s series, winning both meetings with the Wild.
With the home crowd behind them, the Rangers aim to keep that streak alive, while Minnesota looks to flip the script and leave New York with a much-needed road win.

Oddsmakers give the edge to the Rangers, listing them at -130 on the moneyline, while the Wild sit at +110. The puck line has Minnesota -1.5 (-242) and New York +1.5 (+191). The total is set at 5.5 goals, with the over priced at -120 and the under at -101, suggesting expectations for a balanced, moderately scoring contest.
Looking at recent form, the Wild have lost four of their last five games, though they did pull off a close victory over Los Angeles. Their 2-1 conference record shows they can compete within the West, but consistency remains an issue.
The Rangers, meanwhile, are 3-3 in Eastern Conference play and coming off a narrow win over Montreal.
Their offensive depth remains a strength, though defensive miscues have cost them points early.
The Rangers’ offensive numbers tell a story of aggressive play. They rank 10th in goals (15) and 12th in assists (27), while leading the NHL in total shots with 204. That shot volume reflects their willingness to press the attack and generate pressure in the offensive zone.
Defensively, New York ranks among the league’s most physical teams. Their 174 hits rank 3rd overall, and their 95 blocked shots place them 8th. That combination of grit and structure has helped them stay competitive in tight games.
Artemi Panarin and Adam Fox continue to drive production, each with 6 points through 7 games. Panarin’s playmaking and Fox’s offensive instincts from the blue line remain key to the team’s identity.
Between the pipes, Igor Shesterkin owns 2 wins and 125 saves, while Jonathan Quick has chipped in with 41 saves across his appearances.
The Wild’s early-season numbers reflect a team with offensive spark but defensive struggles. They’ve dropped 4 of their last 5 games, their lone win a one-goal decision over the Kings.
Despite the record, their power play has been elite — Minnesota leads the NHL with 10 power play goals.
Matt Boldy and Kirill Kaprizov have been the standouts, each notching 9 points through 6 games. Their scoring touch gives Minnesota a chance every night, but defensive breakdowns have erased much of that advantage. The Wild rank 10th in goals against (19), and that number needs to drop fast if they’re to climb back into contention.
Goaltender Filip Gustavsson has started 4 games, collecting 1 win with 111 saves, though the team has surrendered 14 goals during his appearances. The Wild were heavily outshot and outscored in recent outings, including a tough 5-1 loss to Washington.
To get back on track, Minnesota must tighten their defensive zone coverage and make the most of their special teams opportunities.
Minnesota Wild vs. New York Rangers bottom line: The Rangers’ shot-heavy offense and home-ice advantage give them the edge.
Here is my Wild Rangers free pick. Rangers Moneyline -130.
The Rangers have shown flashes of early-season consistency, taking two of their last five games and finding the back of the net four or more times in a pair of them. That offensive spark, especially at home, suggests they’re beginning to hit their stride offensively.
What’s more, the Wild are sliding hard, dropping four of their last five while giving up at least four goals in three of those losses. Their defensive gaps have been glaring, and that’s a tough flaw to fix when heading into Madison Square Garden.
Given recent form and momentum, the edge clearly tilts toward New York.
The Rangers have history and home-ice advantage on their side, along with a lineup that’s generating consistent pressure.
With New York’s attack trending up and Minnesota’s defense trending down, the play here is straightforward — back the Rangers on the moneyline at -130 to take care of business at home.
