Rielly has a free shot from the slot but Montembeault manages to make the stop. The Canadiens fail to clear the zone, however, and moments later Jarnkrok makes them pay, slamming the puck home past Xhekaj and Montembeault.
Zack Bolduc scores in his first game in a Canadiens uniform after spending the first two years of his career with the Blues.
P2 18:30 – Canadiens 2, Maple Leafs 1
A bad turnover in the defensive zone by the Leafs leads to Stolarz giving up a juicy rebound on a Gallagher shot, and Bolduc is there to jam the puck home! The Habs have their first lead of the night.

We're back in action at Scotiabank Arena.
This is a first. We're watching baseball on the jumbotron at the Leafs game.

With his game-tying goal in the first period, Oliver Kapanen became the fifth player in Canadiens history to score his first career NHL goal while shorthanded.
The other Montreal players to do so: Chris Chelios in 1984, Doug Jarvis in 1975, Lawrence Pleau in 1970 and Jacques Laperriere in 1963.
Canadiens 1, Maple Leafs 1
The first period saw a rough first power play for the Leafs' (slightly) new-look No. 1 unit. They gave up a shorthanded goal and failed to land a shot on goal of their own.
There's a definite adjustment period with Morgan Rielly taking the controls up top in place of a certain forward who departed in the offseason.
Canadiens ice time leader after one period: Alexandre Carrier with seven minutes, 31 seconds. Just as we all predicted.
Bobby McMann opened the scoring for Toronto just 1:00 into tonight's game, marking the Maple Leafs’ sixth-fastest goal in a season opener all-time.
The quicker goals for the Leafs in season openers: Gus Bodnar (0:15 in 1943), Stew Gavin (0:27 in 1983), Darryl Sittler (0:38 in 1975), Zdenek Nedved (0:48 in 1995) and Brian Conacher (0:58 in 1966).

End of P1 – Canadiens 1, Maple Leafs 1
Knies throws the puck on net from a tight angle but no Maple Leaf teammate is in front of Montembeault's net to jam it home.
Then, with two seconds left in the period, Rielly has a huge chance right in front of net after dragging the puck past Carrier but the Habs netminder makes the stop.
P1 3:00 – Canadiens 1, Maple Leafs 1
Stolarz misplays the puck off the boards and nearly gifts the Gallagher and the Canadiens a goal, but does just enough scrambling to recover to prevent disaster.
P1 3:23 – Canadiens 1, Maple Leafs 1
Twice in the space of 20 or so seconds, McMann tries to beat the Canadiens defense down the right wing but isn't able to fully break away.
Maccelli nearly has a huge scoring chance right in front of goal but Matheson checks the puck off his stick just in time.
P1 5:00 – Canadiens 1, Maple Leafs 1
Carlo blocks a Bolduc shot with the side of his leg and is in visible pain for 15 seconds before the next stoppage, Stolarz making a nice poke check to prevent a shot on goal from point-blank range.
The Canadiens fail to get a single shot on goal before Nylander emerges from the box.
P1 7:16 – Canadiens 1, Maple Leafs 1
Nylander catches Guhle in the face with his stick and the Canadiens get their first power play of the night.

P1 7:41 – Canadiens 1, Maple Leafs 1
Domi gets the puck and breaks down the left wing. He's got Joshua in support through the center but opts to shoot on net himself, forcing a save from Montembeault.
There are a lot of Habs fans here at the game tonight – so much so that there was a big cheer after their goal. You wonder if some Leafs fans sold their tickets in order to watch the Blue Jays game instead.
P1 8:13 – Canadiens 1, Maple Leafs 1
Bolduc tries to jam the puck home from point-blank range but Stolarz makes the save. The puck is still loose for a moment but the Leafs netminder is able to cover it up just before Bolduc is able to shoot it again.
