P1 6:15 – Avalanche 0, Kings 0
Gavin Brandley has a burst of speed in the attacking zone along the nearside boards. But his wrist shot goes left of Darcy Kuemper, wide of the target.
Still no score in L.A. Colorado is now leading in shots, after being grossly outshot to start the game.

Welcome back Gabriel Landeskog
Those LA Kings uniforms (and helmets) are 🔥🔥🔥 …

There’s understandably been a lot of talk about the Kings’ older, slower backend. But boy, if their forwards can keep hounding opponents, winning wall battles, and causing problems with their vertical up ice pressure, it’s going to make the job of L.A’s defensemen so much easier.
P1 12:28 – Avalanche 0, Kings 0
No score at the first TV timeout. Valeri Nichushkin fires a wrist shot on target to Darcy Kuemper, who gobbles up the puck.
Who will get the first goal?
Quinton Byfield already looks ready to build on last year’s dominant second-half. He did a terrific job to win the puck back in the attacking zone and flashed lightning-quick hands to drive to the inside for the first Grade-A chance of the game.

P1 20:00 – Avalanche 0, Kings 0
We're underway with the nightcap between the Colorado Avalanche and Los Angeles Kings.
The PA announcer is introducing each player on the Los Angeles Kings roster as they step onto the ice.
We're moments away from puck drop.
Mika Zibanejad said the Rangers could’ve played with more desperation at the end of the game.
“Not much of a push. We had some zone time in the third. Longer shifts. But we didn’t get much out of it."
The nightcap of the NHL's opening night is just around the corner.
The Colorado Avalanche facing the Los Angeles Kings. Should be a fun one.
Settle in, hockey fans!
If this is it for the Penguins’ historic Big 3 — and it is — then nights like this should be savored by everyone.
Appreciate every moment of Crosby, Malkin & Letang.
Yinz will never see anything again like they’ve been for this franchise, city.

There wasn't an obvious reason why fans were cheering at the Rangers game during the middle of the third period, leading to some confusion at the press box. It turns out Aaron Judge hit a game-tying home run in ALDS Game 3, and the New York crowd approved.
FINAL – Penguins 3, Rangers 0
That will do it from Madison Square Garden as the Penguins shut out the Rangers on opening night.
Justin Brazeau's goal late in the first period loomed large all night and New York was never able to equalize despite a few decent chances.
P3 1:52 – Penguins 3, Rangers 0
Blake Lizotte strikes moments later, assisted by Ryan Shea and Connor Dewar.
Lizotte let it fly from well inside the Penguins zone and found nylon regardless.
P3 2:12 – Penguins 2, Rangers 0
New York empties its net with just over two minutes to play and Pittsburgh capitalizes literally seconds later.
The puck finds Malkin and he delivers a perfect pass to Brazeau, who walks into the Rangers zone with nobody in front of him for the empty netter.

P3 4:29 – Penguins 1, Rangers 0
Carson Soucy's shot is blocked but the puck bounces to Mika Zibanejad near the net.
His rebound attempt is blocked but he flicks another shot that sails just over the bar as the Madison Square Garden crowd groans.
That's the best look New York has created in a quite a while.
P3 8:58 – Penguins 1, Rangers 0
Chances continue to pile up for New York but none of them have truly been that menacing.
The Penguins have kept the Rangers away from the dangerous spots on the ice and New York has gotten weak shots on target consistently.
P3 11:47 – Penguins 1, Rangers 0
With less than 12 minutes to play, the two sides are even on shots with 23 apiece.
Shesterkin has kept the Rangers around but they just have not been able to find the equalizer yet.
Pittsburgh deserves credit for that, playing a disciplined defensive game.
