New Mexico professional hockey team named Goatheads – KOAT

The newly-named New Mexico Goatheads will soon be competing in the East Coast Hockey League.
A public vote was held and the results led to the Goatheads being crowned the winner over the Tarantula Hawks and the Cutthroats, respectively.
Goatheads, also known as puncturevine, are desert weeds known for their sharp burrs that can puncture shoes, clothing, skin, along with harm pets and injure livestock. The annual weed inhabits much of the western U.S.

Sean Decker, president of Rev Entertainment which owns the franchise, acknowledged he had never heard of the goathead prior to its selection. But he said he has since traveled and found enjoyment amidst the naming process.
“We learned about the history of both the plant and then the ibex goats down in southern New Mexico and when it all came together,” Decker said. “The fans really voted on this, the fans picked this. But then when we got to learn more about the history, put a logo on a brand together around it, it was super fun.”
Decker also said hires need to be made for coaches and staff ahead of its debut ECHL in the 2026-27 season.
The announcement was made at the Rio Rancho Events Center, home of the new team, on Monday, Sept. 29.
