The St. Louis Blues announced plans to honor 16-year-old Colin Brown, who died on Wednesday after a stray bullet struck him on the way home from his hockey game on Nov. 23.
The St. Louis Blues honored the life of 16-year-old Colin Brown in Wednesday’s game against the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Center.
Brown died on Wednesday after police believe a stray bullet struck him on Interstate 55 in St. Louis on Saturday, according to KBTX. Brown was headed home with his father from his varsity hockey game for Christian Brothers College High School (CBC) around 10:30 p.m.
Brown was taken to the hospital with critical injuries but succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday. His family said Brown donated his organs.
The Blues announced that newly appointed coach Jim Montgomery and the Blues coaching staff would wear pins with “72 Strong” on them to celebrate the life of Brown.
No. 72 was the number Brown wore for his team, the Affton Americans of the Central States Development Hockey League.
The Blues also released a statement on social media offering condolences to Brown’s family, friends and loved ones, saying their hearts are broken.
St. Louis mayor Tishaura O. Jones said Brown’s death is devastating news for the whole community.
“We were all praying for a miracle and are now overwhelmed with grief, sadness and anger that this innocent teenager’s life has been taken,” Jones said in a social media post. “We will never have true justice for the loss of Colin’s life. But I know that the great officers of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department will continue to do all they can to find who is responsible for this senseless and reckless act of violence and hold them accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”
In addition to the Blues’ efforts to support the Brown family, the Dawg Nation Hockey Foundation has provided their support. The nonprofit organization set up a fundraiser to provide a 3-to-1 matching program for every dollar donated, up to $2,500.
On Saturday, the Blues will hold a special pre-game moment for Brown before their match against the Philadelphia Flyers. The proceeds from the 50/50 raffle held by St. Louis and Blues Alumni during that game will benefit the Brown family.
