Dan’s Daily: Penguins Dodge Trouble; Rutherford Hot Seat; Pens Prospects Game – Pittsburgh Hockey Now

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Pittsburgh Penguins’ prospects had to fight their way through Game 2 at the Prospects Challenge in Buffalo. It was a sloppy, physical game, and we’ve got the analysis, specifically of the prospect defensemen. In our latest Penguins Q&A, we touched on potential issues in the Penguins sale, a Sidney Crosby trade, and more. And it seems the Penguins may have been caught up in a situation involving a prospective head coach.
Elsewhere in the Daily, the Vancouver Canucks management, including Jim Rutherford, is on the hot seat this season. The Philadelphia Flyers pulled off a minor but not insignificant goalie trade, and former Dallas coach Pete DeBoer apologized for his comments on goalie Jake Oettinger.
PHN+ and Email: Subscribers: Yes, we have temporarily lost the function of our email capability, and some subscribers are having issues logging in. You don’t need to email about not receiving stories since Aug. 12–that much we know and are working to fix. PHN+ Subscribers, if you’re having issues logging in, let me know.
The website changeover has been frustrating. I hate change, and I liked what we had, but it was starting to break down and couldn’t be expanded. However, right now, I can’t even email all of you to update you on issues. Our new tech partners moved forward, but didn’t really understand how engaged our readers are and how much they rely on the services beyond the appearance of the site. It’s regrettable, but at least it happened in August and September, right?
For the time being, you’ll have to swing by the home page or make sure to follow us on X. In fact, we don’t tweet anything but stories on the PHN X account, so you can set browser notifications for new stories, or set alarms on X for each PHN tweet to see stories as soon as they publish.
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Let’s start with the prospects game. The Columbus Blue Jackets gooned it up, and the Penguins’ prospects took the bait. It was a sloppy, distracted game, but we’ve got the good and bad as we broke down the defensemen, from Harrison Brunicke to Emil Pieniniemi and Daniel Laatsch, following Game 2 of the Penguins Prospects Challenge.
The final game is today at noon.
Here’s as much as we know right now. What did teams know and when did they know it? It seems that as teams were interviewing Mitch Love for their open head coaching positions, a third party sent a letter to a couple of teams detailing a past situation that disqualified him. Now, the Washington Capitals have placed him on leave pending an NHL investigation.
And the Q&A. I keep burying little nuggets about the sale. Hint hint. Also, what will Kyle Dubas do next? What kind of return should we expect on an Erik Karlsson trade? And what of the exploding Sidney Crosby trade talk? It’s all in the Penguins Q&A.
Steelers Now: Yeah, a kickoff is a live ball. Terrible defense, an offense that couldn’t get more than 17, and really boneheaded plays. It was a classic Mike Tomlin Steelers Sunday. We’ve got eight or so stories from Acrisure Stadium, from T.J. Watt sounding off to Derrick Bell’s Dudes and Duds in the Steelers’ loss.
The Province: The seats are getting warm in Vancouver. Jim Rutherford and Patrik Allvin need the team to perform well this season, or it could be bad news for the former Penguins duo in Vancouver.
NHL.com: Former Dallas Stars coach Pete DeBoer ripped his goalie during yet another Western Conference Final loss. He sat down with the venerable Mike Zeisberger for an interview with NHL.com. DeBoer feels bad about the fallout … and other things.
Sportsnet: A season preview. This situation might sound familiar to a lot of Penguins fans–The LA Kings are looking at their season as a potential last ride for Drew Doughty and Anze Kopitar, yet they’re expecting to be competitive.
Since the LA Kings were a team mentioned by Dubas that rebuilt on the fly, it’s interesting to note their progress, success, and limitations. LA might have trapped themselves in the high end of the middle; good enough to make the playoffs, but not good enough to contend with Edmonton, Vegas, and Colorado. How will they overcome that?
The Athletic Montreal ($): Arpon Basu pushed forward the Canadiens and Sidney Crosby trade talk. According to Arpon, whatever the Penguins want, Montreal has it and could make a deal.
Florida Hockey Now: They didn’t take the Cup down to the river and party all summer. Nope, Florida has an ocean and a gulf. Sam Bennett did his partying this summer, and now he’s talking about a three-peat for the Florida Panthers.
Philly Hockey Now: Goalie trade! The Flyers unloaded one of their well-paid but underperforming goalies onto the Columbus Blue Jackets. It is possible, eh? Here are the Flyers trade details.

Hi Dan, yes with change comes headaches and issues. No worries on my part just glad to have your insight. Keep up the great work . Pa what type of bike do you own, just curious. Thanks.
2012 Victory Vegas! Black. She’s been bullet proof. Best I’ve ever had, and don’t tell the bikers this, but so much better than my Softail.
Next trip thru St. Marys, try Marios (I think it is the name) great potato pancakes!
I haven’t had problems logging in so I’m thankful for that. I have noticed alot less comments this month that will hopefully increase once the season starts. I do always comment but I read everyone else’s because there is alot of knowledge about hockey with this group.
