Then No.18 Penn State took down both Delaware and then No.9 Saint Joseph’s in overtime wins over the weekend to improve to a 2-1 record overall.
The blue and white played in its home opener against Delaware on Friday in an aggressive matchup. The clash ended in a 3-2 Penn State win in double overtime.
The game play in the first half ended with neither team finding the back of the net. Delaware put off five shots in the first quarter, but none got past Aby Deverka.

Penn State struck first halfway through the third quarter, as freshman Joji Purdy scored her first goal of the night, assisted by Morgan McMenamin, on a penalty corner. Despite the blue and white’s effort, Delaware returned the favor with a goal with a penalty corner by midfielder Kate Fiest.
Both teams were able to get shots off at the end of the fourth quarter, pushing the game into its first overtime at a score of 2-2.
Delaware was circling the cage in the second overtime period, until Penn State reclaimed the ball after a missed shot from the Blue Hens. Ultimately, the Nittany Lions put the game to an end when Ella Jennes shot a successful penalty corner.
“The main thing for me today was our intensity and our hustle and outworking them,” coach Lisa Bervinchack Love said postgame on Friday.
Penn State kept the ball rolling on Sunday in another overtime win against Saint Joseph’s. The blue and white’s close game ended with a score of 2-1.
Anouk Knuvers scored her first goal with the Nittany Lions towards the end of the first quarter, giving Penn State the lead, 1-0. With seconds left in the first quarter, Saint Joseph’s connected passes down by the circle to put a point on the board.

The rest of regulation play was quiet as both teams continued to duel out for the ball. Penn State’s defensive squad had to work hard in gaining back the ball after constantly being pressed for it.
“I think we started off pretty strong offensively,” Knuvers said. “In the second half, I feel like we were just playing defense the whole time we’re trying to get the ball out.”
The winning-overtime goal came from freshman Olivia Marthins in a fast paced play assisted by Katelyn Strawser. Marthins sent the ball soaring through the net as the crowd erupted, celebrating her first goal and a weekend full of wins.
The blue and white will face off against Bucknell at 6 p.m. Friday and Kent State at noon on Sunday.
