USA Hockey Refuses To Change Plans For Olympics 2026 Despite Panthers’ Matthew Tkachuk Undergoing Surgery – PFSN

The Florida Panthers face a significant challenge as they prepare to defend their Stanley Cup title. Assistant captain Matthew Tkachuk has undergone surgery and will miss the first several months of the 2025-26 season, creating a major hole in their championship roster.
The injury also raises questions about Tkachuk’s availability for Team USA in the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics. However, a surprising development has emerged from the national team’s planning process.

Despite Tkachuk’s recent surgery, Team USA general manager Bill Guerin remains optimistic about the star forward’s Olympic prospects. Guerin, who also oversees the Minnesota Wild, announced that he expects Tkachuk to be available when the games begin in February.
“Planning and expecting (to have him),” Guerin said at the Team USA Olympic Orientation Camp. “I mean, that’s just what I have to do. And if something changes, then we’ll change it, but he’s on and he’s going to be on until he can’t.”
Tkachuk wasn’t among the 44 players who attended the Team USA Orientation Camp in Plymouth, Michigan. The absence was due to his current physical condition following the procedure.
“He called me and just kind of told me what was going on,” Guerin said. “It wouldn’t be great for him get on a plane and fly right now. He didn’t have to be here. “He was upbeat. He’s always upbeat,” he added.

Tkachuk’s current situation stems from injuries he sustained earlier this year. In the minutes following the Panthers’ second consecutive Stanley Cup Final victory over the Edmonton Oilers, Tkachuk revealed he had been playing through an adductor tear and a sports hernia.
The injuries occurred during Tkachuk’s participation for Team USA in the Four Nations Face-Off tournament in February, making his playoff performance even more remarkable.
“I wouldn’t be here without the trainers and the doctors and those people, and that’s what makes this Cup more special for me is how hard it was just to be out there and to get to the point of playing,” Tkachuk said June 18 as the celebration continued on the Amerant Bank Arena ice. “I owe those guys. This Cup is because of them for me, and I’m so lucky,” he added.
The forward’s determination paid off spectacularly. Tkachuk, acquired from the Calgary Flames in a blockbuster July 2022 trade, has helped the Panthers advance to the Stanley Cup Final in the last three seasons. During the recent Stanley Cup Playoffs, he tallied eight goals with 15 assists while battling through significant injuries.
The 2026 Olympics will mark a historic return for NHL players, who haven’t participated since 2014. The tournament will coincide with a break in the NHL schedule and begin on February 6, giving Tkachuk several more months to recover and prepare for what could be a defining moment in his international career.
