We’ll soon see if Ivan Demidov, the prohibitive Calder Trophy odds front-runner, can live up to the billowing hype. With preseason looming, he is miles ahead of the chasing pack.
The hype, however, is justified based on the 19-year-old’s rise to the top of the KHL last season before joining the Montreal Canadiens, where he notched two points on his NHL debut.
The odds have moved about as much as an aging snail, which is about to change with hockey set to start soon.
The Calder Trophy odds are updated in real time.

Demidov, whom I backed in my Calder Trophy best bets following the NHL draft, is the obvious early front-runner. He was proficient during his time in the KHL, leading St. Petersburg with 49 points (19 goals and 30 assists) in 65 games despite being a teenager.
He made an immediate splash in the NHL, too, scoring and assisting in his debut against the Chicago Blackhawks. I know, I know, it was only the Blackhawks. Even so, notching two points in your debut as a teenager is an admirable feat regardless of who the opponent is.
Demidov has two additional advantages: He’s playing on a quick, energetic, and youthful Canadiens team that looks to be coming of age.
Most of their influential youngsters have already persevered through teething pains from their first few years in the league. They’ve matured and can impart that wisdom on Demidov while leading by example.
He’s also bound to get ice time galore, both at even strength and on the power play. His Calder Trophy odds (+240) represent enough value to pull the trigger. If he starts hot, those odds will shorten like the daylight entering a winter in the far north.
You can lock in your Calder Trophy futures pick at all of our best sports betting apps, including FanDuel, BetMGM, bet365, DraftKings, and Caesars, among others.
Shop around to find the best odds and most competitive prices. It’s important to do that continually. Look to see how our best sports betting sites react to contenders’ injuries, hot streaks, cold streaks, and other nuances, like whether the rookie in question has been demoted to the fourth line or promoted to the first.
Markets like Calder Trophy odds are usually found in the “Awards” tab under “futures” market.
