After 14 hard-fought NHL seasons, defenceman Tyson Barrie has announced his retirement Monday from professional hockey.
The 34-year-old Victoria, B.C., native played 809 NHL games across five teams — the Colorado Avalanche, Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, Nashville Predators, and Calgary Flames. Known for his offensive instincts from the blue line, Barrie ends his career with 109 goals, 396 assists, and over 500 career points.
Barrie was drafted 64th overall in 2009 by the Avalanche and made his NHL debut in 2011-12. He quickly built a reputation as a power-play specialist, especially during his time with the Oilers, where he led the NHL’s top-ranked power-play unit in 2021.
Barrie signed a one-year deal with the Flames after attending camp on a professional tryout last season. He was eventually placed on waivers and finished the season with the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers.
