LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – The U.S. Collegiate Women’s Select Team and the U.S. Under-18 Women’s Select Team both defeated Canada today in game two of their respective series against Canada at the Lake Placid Olympic Center on Thursday.
The Collegiate Select Team won 4-3 following a 14-round shootout, while the Under-18 Select Team won a 3-2 contest.
The final game of both series is set for Saturday (Aug. 16), with the Under-18 Select Team dropping the puck against Canada at 2:30 p.m. ET and the Collegiate Select Team’s game slated for 5:30 p.m. ET. Both games can be streamed live on USAHockeyTV.
Canada tallied the afternoon’s first goal just 58 seconds into the game, when Sarah Paul found the back of the net on the first shot of the game. Following the first goal, both teams settled in before Canada had 42 seconds of a 5-on-3 power play with 4:45 left in the opening period. Team USA’s penalty kill held strong, keeping the game at 1-0 as the period expired.
The U.S. scored the next two goals of the game to pull ahead 2-1 with Ava Lindsay (Minnetonka, Minn.) finding twine on the team’s 10th shot of the game, cleaning up a loose puck after a scramble in front of the net, before Julia Pellerin (Windham, N.H.) recorded Team USA’s second of the game, with 9:10 left in the second.
Piper Grober of Canada knotted the game at 2-2 with just 3:23 left in the period to send the game tied heading into the third.
A power play carried over late from the second, and just 34 seconds into the third, Kelly Gorbantenko (Barrington, Ill.) gave the U.S. a 3-2 lead, chipping the puck over the glove of Canada’s netminder as she fell to the ice.
A late goal by Paul, her second of the game, sent the contest to overtime. After a scoreless overtime, Elyssa Biederman (Franklin, Mich.) scored the game-winner in the 14th round of the shootout.
Annelies Bergmann (Troy, Mich.) made 24 saves in net.
NOTES: The U.S outshot Canada, 33-27 … the U.S. was 2-5 on power plays, while Canada was 1-8.
Canada opened the game strong, outshooting the U.S. ,12-6, in the first frame. It was the 12th shot though for the Canadians that found the back of the net, as Megan Mossey scored on the power play with just 52 seconds remaining in the period.
Early into the second Jillian McLaughlin (Oceanside, Calif.) created separation in the high slot, carrying the puck in tight unmarked. She caught the goalie sprawled out, but the shot trickled wide. With 15:07 remaining in the second, Sloane Hartmetz (Phoenixville, Pa.) knotted the game at 1-1, fooling the goaltender on a fake pass from just inside the faceoff dot.
Canada regained the lead just minutes later when Kendall Doiran lifted the puck over the outstretched pad of Bianca Birrittieri (Flower Mound, Texas), taking a 2-1 advantage into the third period.
With a tick under 10 remaining, Hartmetz scored her second of the game, a rebound just inside the circle that deflected off the goalie’s pads and into the net. McLaughlin then gave the U.S. a 3-2 lead, its first of the series, with 7:57 remaining in the game.
Team USA’s defense locked down in the final minutes, controlling the puck for the remainder of the game.
NOTES: Canada outshot the U.S., 30-23 … The U.S. was 1-3 on the power play, while Canada was 1-6.
