Clubs in the Premier League and across Europe are still scrambling to bolster their squads ahead of this summer’s transfer deadline.
Fresh deals continue to emerge while there are plenty of existing negotiations bubbling along in the background. Here are today’s headlines:

Sunderland defender Luke O'Nien has signed a contract extension to take him through to 2027.
A release on the club's website also confirmed that the extension has a club option of an additional year.
The 30-year-old has been at the newly-promoted club since 2018 and has made 314 appearances for them in all competitions. He is the longest-serving member of the first-team squad.
O'Nien only missed one game in the Championship last season as Sunderland finished fourth and got promoted back the Premier League.
Their first game is on August 16 at home to West Ham.

Everton have made progress over a deal for Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Tom King.
Talks between the two clubs are at an advanced stage with the Welshman likely to move to Merseyside for a nominal fee.
King would be Everton's seventh signing of the summer and offer cover for England No 1 Jordan Pickford and Mark Travers. Everton have been looking to add to their goalkeeping options after the summer departures of Joao Virginia and Asmir Begovic.
King, 30, counts Northampton Town, Newport County and Salford City among his former clubs. He has one cap for Wales, which came in a friendly against Gibraltar last year.
The Merseyside club have spent around £90million in the market so far, including the headline loan addition of Jack Grealish from Manchester City earlier this week. The Athletic reported that the 29-year-old will cost Everton in the region of £12m for the season.
David Moyes' side start the new season with a trip to Leeds United on Monday.
Lyon have confirmed their termination of Nemanja Matic's contract after a mutual agreement on Thursday.
The 37-year-old was on a deal set to take him through to June 2026 but has parted ways with the French side a year early, as announced on their website.
Matic joined Lyon in January 2024 and played 58 games in all competitions for them. The former Chelsea and Manchester United midfielder made 189 appearances for the latter club before leaving in 2022.

Can Andoni Iraola’s side get one over Liverpool as they come up against Milos Kerkez, who left them to move to Anfield this summer?
We cannot wait.
West Bromwich Albion defender Torbjorn Heggem is joining Bologna in a deal worth around €8million (£6.9m) that could rise up to €10m with add-ons.
The 26-year-old Norway international is leaving West Brom after agreeing personal terms with the Serie A side and will sign a three-year contract with a further year option.
Heggem was a standout performer in the Championship last season after signing for just £300k last summer.
West Brom wanted to keep the centre-back but felt the offer was too good to turn down, with the Championship side retaining a sell-on clause and saying the deal also includes €2m in add-ons.
Heggem started in the 1-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers on Saturday but was left out of the team in the midweek penalty shoot-out defeat to Derby County in the Carabao Cup.
West Brom have signed centre-backs Nat Phillips and George Campbell this summer.
Liverpool midfielder Luca Stephenson has signed a new contract at the club and has joined Dundee United on loan for the season.
The 21-year-old spent last season with United, where he made 24 appearances.
He signed his first professional deal with Liverpool in 2020.

Landing transfer targets at Newcastle United this summer has been a bit like trying to nail jelly to a wall.
They have missed out on a number of high-profile targets, all while Alexander Isak has been trying to force through a move. All the while, the rest of the football industry has been rubbernecking in Newcastle’s direction.
Outside of Newcastle, senior figures in the game have used the word “unrealistic” rather than ambitious to describe the pursuit of players who were wanted by Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City, Real Madrid and Manchester United. In other words, the club’s transfer strategy was flawed.

Well, this is a whopper of a transfer fee.
Wrexham have broken their club record transfer fee to sign Ipswich Town’s Nathan Broadhead for an initial £7.5 million.
The 27-year-old Wales international has signed a four-year deal after weeks of wrangling between the two clubs ended with a deal being struck that includes several performance-related add-ons, such as winning promotion to the Premier League.
He becomes the ninth signing of the summer by head coach Phil Parkinson, in the process breaking the previous record fee paid last month for Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O’Brien.

We have a monster deal to tell you about and it comes from the Championship…
Brighton & Hove Albion teenager Malick Yalcouye has completed a season-long loan move to Championship side Swansea City.
From Moises Caicedo to Carlos Baleba and eventually, perhaps, Yalcouye. Nobody does succession planning better than Brighton. That is the idea with the 19-year-old midfield prospect.
Yalcouye had only played 11 senior matches when Brighton signed him from IFK Gothenburg in last summer’s transfer window for £7.6 million.
A year on, after impressing in a season on loan to Sturm Graz in the Champions League and the Austrian top flight, a second-tier stint in Wales is the next step in the development of Yalcouye, born in Mali but raised in Ivory Coast.
Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler is a big fan of the player. Swansea supporters could end up feeling the same way about the slightly built but gifted teenager.
Roma have made an offer worth £20million (€23.2m, $27.1m) to sign Manchester United’s Jadon Sancho on a permanent transfer.
The bulk of the Italian club’s offer is a fixed upfront fee, which is inclusive of add-ons, but there is an acknowledgement that it would be a tricky deal to complete.
Club-to-club talks are at an early stage and there has not yet been any indication from Sancho on whether he would be open to the move.

Our man David Ornstein is at it again and we have an update on our earlier story regarding Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho…
T’is the season for players trying to force through a transfer, as they down tools at their club in the hope of landing their dream move.
And as sure as you will find players willing to force a move, so too will you find hordes of fans pushing for the sale (or purchase) of that player on social media.
From Alexander Isak disappearing from his pre-season duties at Newcastle United to the trending hashtag #FreeWissa demanding that Yoane Wissa should be liberated from Brentford, this summer has already been an eventful one.

Fabian Hurzeler was lauded after steering Brighton to eighth place in his first season in the Premier League, but he didn’t spend much of his summer sitting back and admiring his own work.
The German has lost Joao Pedro to Chelsea and overseen the signings of five new players. He also found time to sit down with our man Andy Naylor for a chat. Here’s how he reflects on a big summer for Brighton:
💬 “There were big offers for Kaoru Mitoma (from Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr in January), interest in Jan Paul van Hecke in this window, but the club showed they can stay strong, keep their best players as well.
“We know how we want to work here, we know the Brighton way.”

This summer we have already seen big moves to Liverpool for Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong.
The way both play — as relentless runners going forward — has the potential to disrupt back lines and unlock a new style of attack under Arne Slot.
If you wanted a clear signal as to how Slot is looking to retain the title, it looks as though attack is his best form of defence.
Is there a resolution in sight for Wissa and Brentford?

Roma are working on a loan deal to sign Manchester United’s Jadon Sancho.
The Serie A side have made an offer for the England international but there is an acknowledgement that it would be a tricky deal to complete. Roma are also in talks to sign Aston Villa’s Leon Bailey on loan as they look to add to their attacking options.
Sancho had options in England and around Europe that he was expected to explore before making a decision on his next step. His United contract runs until next June, with the option of a further year.

Brentford head coach Keith Andrews has said he has decided Yoane Wissa will be unavailable for Brentford’s Premier League opener against Nottingham Forest due to the forward’s uncertain future.
The Athletic reported in July that Brentford rejected a £25million bid from Newcastle for Wissa, while Forest also had an approach knocked back. The 28-year-old forward subsequently withdrew from Brentford’s training camp in Portugal, and he has not featured in any of the club’s pre-season fixtures.
Everton are set to confirm the signing of teenage Charlton defender Reuben Gokah.
The Athletic reported last month that the 16-year-old centre-back was on course to swap south east London for Merseyside in time for the new season, with fellow defensive prospect John Dodds also joining from Scottish side Hearts.
Capped by England Under-15s, Gokah is initially expected to be part of the Everton Under-18s.
Everton remain on the lookout for a new academy director and head of academy recruitment after the departures of Gareth Prosser and James Vaughan this summer.
Head of academy coaching Carl Darlington, formerly of the Welsh FA, has been named as interim academy director while a replacement for Prosser is found.
That process is expected to be led by new technical director Nick Cox, who is currently working his notice period at Manchester United before joining officially at the end of the summer. Cox was head of academy at Manchester United.
