The Ivy League quietly approved an increase in allowed regular-season games for its member teams, from 29 to 30. The NCAA limit for non-Ivy teams remains at 34, not including exemptions and postseason games.
The last time the league increased its games limit was in the 1990s, when it went from 27 to 29. That coincided with an NCAA increase from 32 to 34.
In recent years, the Ivy League had approved a second weekend of exhibition games for Ivy League teams. Many schools took advantage of that by scheduling other Ivy League teams. Now, instead, the conference will allow one of those exhibitions to become a regular-season game.
Because the decision came down so late in the offseason, the six Ivy teams — Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton and Yale — already had their schedules set. If possible, they turned exhibition games that were scheduled against each other, into regular-season games.
Cornell, for example, could not do that, because it was locked into exhibition games against the U.S. Under-18 team and a Czech club team. It plans to go to 30 games next season.
Because of the games restriction, Ivy teams often open their seasons with non-league games against teams that already have upwards of eight games under their belt.
