Auston Matthews is the latest member of the Toronto Maple Leafs to headline the annual Hockey Night In Brampton event, a charity hockey game that raises funds to build a hospital in the city.
The annual event, which started in 2019, has featured a number of big names from the Leafs. Last year, Mitch Marner (now with the Vegas Golden Knights) and Max Domi were team captains. John Tavares also captained one of the teams in 2023.
Matthews expressed his excitement for the cause, stating, "I’m honoured and excited to be part of Hockey Night in Brampton this year. It’s always special to give back to the community through the game that has given us so much." He added, "Seeing guys like Mitch, John and Max take part in the past made it clear how important this cause is. I’m looking forward to hitting the ice and being part of an incredible night for the fans."

Launched by Brampton mayor Patrick Brown, the event raised $14 million last year for the Osler Foundation, and organizers boasted that it was the largest charity game in Canadian history.
In addition to the team captains, the list of participants includes Owen Power, Ryan Getzlaf, former Maple Leafs Curtis Joseph, Mark Giordano and Owen Nolan, Taylor Raddysh, Darren Raddysh, Travis Barron, Phil Oreskovic, Blayre Turnbull, Renata Fast, Jeremy Roenick, Cody Hodgson and Terry Ryan.
The event will take place at the CAA Centre on August 20 at 7 p.m. ET, with doors opening at 6 p.m. ET. Tickets are available at www.hockeynightbrampton.ca.
The event will mark Matthews’ first public appearance in Toronto since the 2024-25 season concluded. The 2022 Hart Trophy winner had what many considered to be a down year, as he was dealing with an undisclosed injury all season. He recorded a career-low 33 goals while adding 45 assists in 67 games.
