There will be some new blood in the Rutland County high school field hockey coaching ranks this fall.
Tammy Landon takes over at Rutland High School, looking to give the program a jolt that will bring it back to prominence.
Jodie Keith and Craig Pettis are back in their coaching posts this year at Otter Valley and Fair Haven, hoping to take their squads to the next level.
There will be a little bit of a hole in the field hockey landscape around here with Springfield not fielding a team, but there is plenty of quality competition to look forward to.
Let’s take a look at some interesting field hockey matchups to watch this fall at the three field hockey schools in Rutland County.
OV at FHU, 9/4
Otter Valley has had the better of this Rutland County rivalry, but the games are often competitive.
The Otters dominated the first matchup last year, but only won by a goal in the return affair in Fair Haven.
BBA at RHS, 9/8
Burr and Burton Academy has had the advantage in this rivalry for years, but some of their most recent games have been competitive.
One of the two contests last year was decided by a single goal.
This will be the third game of the season for Rutland, so they’ll be well on their way to establishing Landon’s culture with the team.
FHU at Windsor. 9/20
Windsor is the defending Division III champions, so this will be a great test for Pettis’ Slaters.
Fair Haven and Windsor have had some great games in a ton of female sports over the years and the field hockey field has been no different.
There was a time when Windsor would dominate these field hockey contests, but that isn’t the time we are living in.
Bratt at RHS, 9/20
Brattleboro and Rutland are massive rivals in most sports, but haven’t met often in field hockey in recent years so this will be a nice change of pace from previous campaigns.
They’ll meet twice this fall and this is the first of those two.
Similar to Rutland, the Bears are a team that are trying to establish a winning culture to build off of.
Woodstock at OV, 9/20
These clubs tied once and Otter Valley won by a single goal in their matchups last year.
OV and Woodstock tend to always put really quality teams on the field, so it should make for a nice battle.
An extra wrinkle to this game is that the teams meet nine days later as well.
OV at BBA, 10/13
These two squads are always super competitive in the Southern Vermont League field hockey landscape.
Their is some recent history to give this late-season matchup a little extra oomph as Otter Valley ended BBA’s season in the playoffs last year, avenging a regular season defeat at the hands of the Bulldogs.
RHS at FHU, 10/14
Rutland and Fair Haven have had a lot of really competitive matchups over the last handful of years, as the Slaters have built up their program.
An extra piece of intrigue to this game is the fact that former Fair Haven coach Allison Kennedy, who led the Slaters to a state final during her time coaching the team, is now a varsity assistant and JV coach at her alma mater Rutland.
Not only will she be able to see some familiar faces in the Slate Valley, but she’ll know the opponent like the back of her hand.
