Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson’s attempt to mock the Montreal Canadiens with a fake crying face quickly became the defining image of Game 3.
After the final result, with the Habs beating the Capitals 6-3 on Friday, it’s fair to say the meme-worthy gesture went viral for all the wrong reasons as the Canadiens got the last laugh.
The Capitals veteran found himself at the center of the spotlight after a wild second-period scrum against the Canadiens on Friday night.
Following a collision involving Wilson, Josh Anderson, and Arber Xhekaj, chaos broke out and spilled toward the Capitals’ bench as players from both teams shoved and chirped.
Once separated, Wilson turned to the Montreal bench and pretended to cry, taunting the Canadiens while Bell Centre erupted with chants of “Ole Ole Ole.”
Wilson and Anderson each received 10-minute misconducts and two-minute roughing minors. Xhekaj and Capitals forward Lars Eller were also assessed roughing penalties.
The Canadiens held a 3–2 lead at the time of the brawl. Although Alex Ovechkin tied the game for Washington early in the third period, Wilson’s antics only seemed to ignite Montreal further.
Christian Dvorak scored less than two minutes after the game-tying goal, putting the Habs 4-3 ahead before teammates Juraj Slafkovsky and Alex Newhook added two more goals to complete a decisive 6–3 victory.
It was a rough night overall for the Capitals. Starting goalie Logan Thompson left late in the third period due to injury after a collision with teammate Dylan Strome.
That happened just a few minutes after Canadiens’ starter Sam Montembeault left the game in the second frame.
The Canadiens trail 2-1 in the first-round series but will look to even it up in Game 4 on Sunday night at Bell Centre in Montreal.
