One of the newest members of the Buffalo Sabres, veteran goaltender Alex Lyon, spoke with the media this week.
The Sabres signed Lyon, 32, when NHL free agency opened last week to a two-year deal worth $3 million.
Last season, Lyon started in 26 games for the Detroit Red Wings, winning 14 of those contests.
He says he’s ready to support both starting netminder Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and young up-and-comer Devon Levi but also compete for playing time.
"My aspiration is to always play as many games as possible and win as many games as possible,” Lyon said. “That’s a good mentality to have. You have to be ultra-competitive in the goalie room but also extremely supportive at the same time. It’s a really fine balance to strike, but that is a strength for sure that I have."
Lyon says he spoke with former Sabres goalie James Reimer before signing, who spoke positively of his time in Buffalo.
“I’ve learned a lot from [Reimer] and he was probably the most even human in the world. He doesn’t get high or too low. So I try to emulate that a bit,” Lyon said.
