It’s been quiet on the Avalanche front lately, but it hasn’t stopped the reports and rumors from flying around.
The latest report, from TSN’s Darren Dreger, stated that the Avs are among the teams interested in Buffalo Sabres defenseman Bowen Byram. Dreger reported this on the Ray & Dregs Podcast earlier on Thursday, before reiterating it again on TSN’s Insider Trading segment later in the afternoon.

It appears that Byram, who is a left-shot defenseman, is struggling to come to terms on a new deal with Buffalo. Byram is an RFA after signing a two-year deal with the Avs two summers ago before he was dealt for Casey Mittelstadt.
There really isn’t a fit for him on that team. And quite honestly, I’m not even sure why they got him in the first place. Buffalo already has Rasmus Dahlin and Owen Power as lefties on the blueline and both are locked up to big-money, long-term deals. They also have LD Mattias Samuelsson locked up long term on the third pair.
“The Sabres are looking to turn the potential of a contract problem into a playing asset, very similar to JJ Peterka,” Dreger said on Insider Trading.” There is a ton of interest in Bowen Byram, as you would expect.
“Now initially, (Sabres GM) Kevyn Adams wanted a right-shot defenseman as part of a package for Byram, but he got that from the Peterka trade.
“I’m looking at L.A., Vegas, St. Louis, Vancouver, Colorado, and maybe a long shot, the Toronto Maple Leafs as teams with interest in Byram.”

It’s hard to really gauge what could be offered, if the Avs landed their 2019 top draft pick. Samuel Girard doesn’t fit their needs.
But what about Josh Manson? He’s a righty that can slot into their top-four on one of the top two pairs, along with new acquisition Michael Kesselring. The Sabres are in desperate need of a veteran to steer the ship and play with Power or Dahlin.
It obviously would take more than just Manson to make a deal happen. But it’s also hard to really put an offer together, just because the Sabres don’t always make trades that make sense at first glance.
Are they looking for young pieces? The Avs don’t have many of those to offer. Do they want players with term and cost certainty? Manson only has one year remaining and the other potential trade assets are guys like Ross Colton, Miles Wood, etc. Draft picks? Avs don’t have much of those either.
Either way, it’s interesting to see their name even being mentioned as a possible landing spot for Byram. It would also be cool to see Byram return, if they can manage to make it work.

I hope they bring him back!
Interesting, if Dreger is saying this there must be some validity to it. The Sabres (or more specifically that doofus Adams). Want ready to contribute roster players in return., not futures. I’d like to speculate on who on the Avs they might want. But with them who honestly knows? Any trade you’d have to think would need to have either Girard or Manson going there way. Would love to have Bo back. My concerns would be how would he feel about coming back & again being relegated to 2nd pair mins? And moreso what is he looking for contract wise?… Read more »
The Avs would be fools not to pursue Bo, if he is in fact available. The fit is obviously there, as is the rapport with the teammates, coaches, and fans. Even bigger: it would be a great PR move for the front office to bring such a popular player back to Denver. Manson would be a good fit for Buffalo, as you mentioned, but I actually wonder if the Sabres would have a different d-man on their radar: Malinski. Would the two teams swap RFA’s, with Buffalo getting a rising and still relatively young right-shot defenseman to join Dahlin on… Read more »
Damn, Malinski does make a lot of sense in that regard. I can see them looking to develop him into a bigger top 4 role, which hes pretty close to becoming. I’m glad you mentioned him.
Do byram for colton manson and olausson
Malinski makes a ton of sense, but he also pairs well with Bo. Let’s also not forget that swapping 70 wouldn’t help pay for Bo at all. Manson makes better sense on the salary front.
Completely agree, I think pairing Sam and Bo would be dynamite. I just see a scenario where the Sabres ask for Malinski specifically in the trade proposal, because he would work beautifully with Dahlin for the same reasons he would work with Byram.
Byram is going to ask for $6.5-$7m for his next contract. He signed a $4.5m 2 year bridge deal with Colorado and will want and probably get from somebody a max term deal around that AAV. No chance the Avs can afford to pay a second pairing D that amount. Trading Manson is a great idea given his age and injury history, but realistically someone like Perbix is who we will target IMO. Need to keep Malinski given his cost as a solid 3rd pairing guy.
Maybe Adams would take Manson and Wood for Bo? He’s a dufus, but he outplayed MacF on the Bo for Middleton trade. He owes us!
Yea he’s a doofus that got the better end of your GM with a trade. 🙄
Not to be overly pessimistic, but I think you guys are greatly overrating Malinski’s trade value. I think they would want Girard or Manson. Plus from a salary perspective the only way to pave the way to sign Bo would be to clear out quite a bit of money. I would offer them Girard & Colton. That is very fair value. And I honestly am pretty iffy as to whether Buffalo would even desire Colton & his AV. But if Bo is going to command 7ish. That clears 9. And leaves you with roughly 3 million in space to sign… Read more »
Nobody is saying Malinski for Byram is the deal. Given Manson’s injuries, his value is absolutely roughly on-par with Malinski. Girard would be worth more than both together, but he’s a lefty
The Sabres want a forward, as the main piece, back in any trade for Byram. We just traded Peterka and we want to replace his spot with another top 6 forward. Im a Sabres and Avs fan and I was pumped when we got Bo, but he’s redundant in our system. There is no contract dispute, there is just too many cooks in the kitchen on our left side. I don’t really see a fit with what the Avs can give the Sabres in a Byram trade. I just hope they don’t take Necas for Bo, I don’t trust him… Read more »
How can anyone watch the finals, see the physicality of it, and decide that the best way to win the cup is to make our defensive corps even smaller and even more vulnerable. The other day its fans wanting to create one of the smallest third lines in the NHL, today its wanting to make the smallest D corps. Insanity. Byram is a solid player, who I would much rather have than Girard, but Girard is not going to be the player going out. Manson, his good and his bad, at least brings some physicality to our team and provides… Read more »
Oh sure, we definitely don’t need another Makar. Two Norris trophies at 25, logging 30 minutes a night, and breaking out of the zone so smoothly it puts GPS to shame, clearly overrated. We should probably bench him for balance.   And Malinski, approaching 27, still daring to play in the NHL without transforming into a protein-shake-fueled tank? Outrageous. If he hasn’t figured out by now that building muscle helps you survive in this league, then obviously there’s just no room for him. Maybe send him a gym membership and a dumbbell emoji as a gentle nudge.   But hey,… Read more »
No, we need size on our blue line . Every year when the playoffs come around, we seem to lose that battle more often than not. They did bring in some size for the forwards grp . When Manson is out which is most of the time, we are owed by bigger teams. We need some grit, and size on the blue line already… top two 187,191. Next 170, 190 218 when healthy lastly 198 and xxxx. We need some youth with size on our blue line. And pls keep Middleton.. he’s salvageable..
