Game 5 of the Calder Cup Finals was a big one, as the Charlotte Checkers were in a must-win situation against the Abbotsford Canucks. Down 3-1 at the Abbotsford Centre, the Checkers came up big when it was most important and won 4-3, extending the series.
The Checkers scored first, but the Canucks answered and the game was deadlocked from there, with four second-period goals leading to a completely even third period. With no goals being scored in the final period of regulation, the game went to overtime.
After Abbotsford hit the post and forced a huge save out of Kahkonen, the Checkers found the net off the skate of an Abbotsford player. While the goal wasn’t the prettiest, it kept Charlotte’s season alive, and now they’ll head back to the Bojangles Coliseum for Game 6 to try and force a Game 7.

The Charlotte Checkers get the puck to ricochet into the net off of the skates of two Abby Canucks, and Jesse Puljujärvi gets credited with the goal. Charlotte wins 4-3.
With Jujhar Khaira all alone in front of him, Kahkonen makes the save with his glove from point-blank range to save the Checkers’ season.

Sasson was inches away from ending the game and the series, who had Kahkonen beat, but hit the post right under Kahkonen’s glove. An offsides call leads to a media timeout with 9:26 left to play in overtime.

Everyone on the ice is giving the rest of the energy they have to the end of this game, the puck is flying around, bodies are flying around to block shots, sticks are in the right place at the right time. Charlotte has a 4-2 shot advantage 7:40 into overtime.
The Canucks managed to get the puck into a pile of bodies in the crease, but it bounced just wide and Charlotte recovered.
Charlotte gets the first shot of overtime by Matt Kiersted, but Silovs holds it and gets the whistle.
Linus Karlsson looked to have a breakaway, but gets called offsides.
The puck has been dropped, and overtime has started at the Abbotsford Centre. If the Canucks win tonight, it will be the third year in a row that the Calder Cup has been won in overtime, as the Hershey Bears won the cup in overtime the past two years.
LET’S GET OVERTIME GOING!

Teams are back on the ice and almost set for overtime, the next goal will either decide the Calder Cup winner or send the series back to Charlotte.
60 minutes wasn’t enough time for this one to be decided. For the third time this series, we’ve got overtime! We’ll be back in 18 minutes for free hockey.
After 60 minutes, Charlotte leads the shot differential 35-24, and the next goal scored wins the game.
Officials are having a conversation as the puck went over the ice. The Canucks want a delay of game call, but the initial call is saying the puck went off Blais’ stick and the game is staying 5-on-5.
The Abby Canucks could not have asked for two better looks, but Kahkonen was all over both of them, denying both shots from right in front of the net and keeping the game level. There’s a media timeout with 4:45 left to play. Watch the saves here:

10 minutes remain in regulation and this game is still tied at 3 and both defenses are giving it their all to keep the puck out of the net and deny any shots possible.
In what was perhaps the best shot of the third period so far, Blais ripped a shot that went just over Kahkonen’s head and off the ice back into Abby’s defensive zone.
After a slow start to the period, the Canucks offense put three shots on goal and threatened the Checkers, finding them out of rhythm and forcing turnovers in their defensive zone. No shots have found the back of the net yet and the game is still tied at three each.
In just two minutes of play in the third period, the Checkers have already put three shots on goal and have all of the offense momentum.
The final 20 minutes of regulation are on. Will we see overtime? Will a champion be crowned tonight? Will the serie go back to Charlotte? Follow along for all of the action.
The second period was full of action, including four goals, but the Checkers have had the majority of the offensive momentum, winning the second period shot battle 14-7. The Canucks utilized their four-on-four advantage, with both of their goals in the period coming in the penalty time for both teams. The Checkers added a power-play goal of their own, and when Abbotsford took the lead for the first time, Charlotte responded by evening the score.
Now, the Canucks have 20 minutes of regulation left to take the lead and seal the Calder Cup Trophy and the Checkers have 20 minutes to send the series back to Charlotte.

A scuffle after a Silovs save leads to roughing penalites.
The Checkers capitalize on an Abbotsford turnover and Brett Chorske finds the back of the net on an assist from Jesse Puljujärvi. The Checkers are back in front and are playing like their season is on the line.
Charlotte started the period with a power play but was unable to capitalize after a late penalty on Sammy Blais in the last second of period one.
The puck has dropped and second period action is underway.
We’re all tied up at one after 20 minutes, and Charlotte is winning the shots battle, 12-11. The game was much cleaner than last night’s, until there were 0.3 seconds left in the period as a late Sammy Blais hit on took him straight to the box for roughing.
Both teams found the back of the net in the first and now there’s 40 minutes left to play.

Ben Steeves scores on assists from Jack Devine and Oliver Okuliar, slotting his shot past Silovs. The goal came at the 12:55 mark.
Arsheed Bains gets a big shot on an open net, but Kahkonen somehow comes up with a big save.
Charlotte has the first shot on goal and Silovs comfortable makes the save.
The puck has dropped and the action has started in Abbotsford. Will there be another quick goal tonight or will it take time for teams to score?
