It’s Saturday, so it’s an official welcome to the weekend!
We’ve gone back to “PhHN Daily” for now, one of our great readers pointed out what was thought of when you hear “Daily Whiz” and I cannot unhear it, so we’re headed back to the drawing board, and suggestions are appreciated!
On to hockey!
A star may be unhappy in his current home, and the Flyers have had interest in the past, so naturally, we connected the dots as to why it could make sense. In other Philadelphia hockey news, the NHL Draft Combine is taking place in Buffalo, so we’re keeping tabs on all Flyers mentions.
The Stanley Cup Final is now through two games, and man, is it a fun series. Who thought it could get any better than Game 1?
And of course, it’s the offseason for 30 other teams, so the rumor mill is turning. We got the latest on a variety of things as well. Get it all in today’s edition of the name TBD Daily!

Philly Hockey Now: The Flyers still have many needs to fill on their current roster, and getting another scoring forward is one. Danny Briere and Co. were interested in Martin Necas last year, and he may be available yet again. Should the Flyers trade for the Colorado forward?
NHL Draft Combine: It’s hard to keep tabs on everything that is going on at the NHL Combine, so I am going to start a running list of Flyers-related mentions. Today, here are the players that have had dinner with the Flyers at the combine: Jake O’Brien (C, Brantford, OHL) and Brady Martin (C, SOO, OHL).
There are likely more, but the Flyers keep things close to the vest, so I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s more.
Russ Cohen also reported the Flyers’ interest in defenseman Jackson Smith, but mentions he does not think it will be at No. 6. Is a possible trade up on the way?
If you thought it could not get better than a late-period OT-winner in Game 1, you would stand corrected after Game 2.
After starting the game with a five-goal first period and a 3-2 Oilers lead, the Panthers’ blueliners settled in and let their offense take the lead. After 40 minutes, Florida had a 4-3 lead.
It looked as if Florida was going to keep the Oilers scoreless for the final 47:23 of the game, and squeak out a nailbiting 4-3 win. However, Corey Perry had a different idea. With 18 seconds to go, Perry scored for Edmonton, extending the game to OT.
It would not take just one extra frame, but a second.
Who else but the rat king himself, Brad Marchand, to score the double-OT winner, and even the series for the Panthers.
It’s also worth mentioning that it was Marchand’s second of the postseason. He is likely to secure another lucrative contract this offseason in the UFA market.
I said it after Game 1, and I will say it again. The rematch was the best possible outcome for the Cup Finals. Just about nine periods of hockey have been played between the two games. You can see the aggression and hostility on the ice. Lots of goals being scored and exciting ones at that. This truly is the best series we could have asked for.
Also, make sure to check out George Richards’ game story for Florida Hockey Now!
Seravalli: Yesterday, in my Martin Necas story, I mentioned the idea of taking on extra salary to make a trade for Necas work. Josh Manson was the player I mentioned. I was close, but not quite correct. On the DFO Live, Frank Seravalli mentioned there has been chatter around Avs D-man Sam Girard, Manson’s partner.
Friedman: On NHL Network yesterday, Elliote Friedman shared that the new CBA should be done “very soon” as long as everything goes as expected. It looks like a potential lockout will be avoided.
Johnston: On his own show, Chris Johnston mentioned that Mitch Marner intends to hit the open market, but he is not ruling out the Maple Leafs. It seems as if he just wants to see what’s out there.
Marek: On The Sheet, Jeff Marek talked about Dallas firing Pete DeBoer. Marek described the move as “the first domino” and said that the team could make “ruthless decisions” to improve. Could that include trading star Jason Robertson?

Will I know they are just interviewing people so you think they have to interview hagens, frondell, des and porter? Fans will not be happy if the flyers reach two years in a row… especially at 6. I know they said they don’t listen to the consensus ranking but if 99 percent of the scouts has these tiers why would the flyers think their ten scouts are smarter then everyone? Keep the updates on combine players and stats… it’s awesome. Also Alex said Utah likes Martin now so that would be great from the flyers as 2 players in tier 2 would drop.
Every top prospect will interview with all the top teams, for the most part. Some of those things don’t get as overblown as the dinners do. Cam Robinson (who is super trustworthy with prospect stuff) had the Martin report, which is very much true, and would be great for the Flyers.
As far as other dinners, Porter Martone has dines with the Flyers and Utah.
Do you think they can have meetings that we never hear about or will it always come to light? Did they interview Luchanko last year? Also heard that they interviewed Cole Reschny. I think that would be a great pick at 22. Heard they interviewed hagens and a bunch of guys. Is there really any difference between dinners and meetings? Maybe those guys were just busy.
The Daily Slap Shot
Regarding trade candidates, Necas would be nice, but I would much prefer Robertson. Hopefully it can be done without giving up six.
