While the team schedule listed the U.S. ice slot at 11 a.m. today as an optional skate, all 25 players hit the ice with excitement in preparation for tomorrow’s semifinal game against host Sweden. It was relatively quiet today at Avicii Arena (The Globe) during Team USA’s time at the rink as both Switzerland and Denmark were in the midst of traveling from Herning, Denmark, here to Stockholm for the semifinals and medal games. There was still much buzz today around the rink about Denmark’s historic upset of Canada in the yesterday’s quarterfinals. After practice, selected players spent some time with the assembled media covering the tournament to share thoughts headed into the semifinals.

While the sun peeked out for a short time this afternoon, the day here in Stockholm was mostly gray with chilly temperatures hovering in the very low 50s. That did not stop U.S. players and staff, along with their families and guests, from finding time to explore Stockholm and all that the world-class city has to offer. The capital of Sweden and the country’s most populous city, Stockholm includes approximately one million residents. Visiting the Old Town, Vasa Museum, Abba Museum and shopping districts were among the varied activities.
Cutter Gauthier was in high demand by the Swedish media following practice this morning. He was born in Skelleftea, Sweden, in January 2004 when his father Sean was wrapping up his professional playing career as a goaltender with Skelleftea AIK. Gauthier’s sister, Kennedy, was also born in Skelleftea. Prior to helping Team USA win gold in the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship in Gothenburg, Sweden, Gauthier had not been back to Sweden since moving away to Arizona when he was two. Cutter's mom, Kim, and sister, Kennedy, are here in Stockholm, cheering on Team USA … Team USA is 0-2 against Sweden in the men’s worlds semifinals. The U.S. is 2-12 in the semifinals overall with its last win coming in 1934 … Zeev Buium has three IIHF gold medals to his credit, including two in the IIHF World Junior Championship (2024, 2025) and one in the IIHF Under-18 Men’s World Championship (2023) … Tage Thompson (2018, 2021) and Conor Garland (2021, 2023) have both played in two previous semifinal games of the men’s world championship, while seven other players have competed in one semifinal.

It came down to the final game of the preliminary round – which ended at 11 o’clock last night and had Denmark beating Germany in a shootout — before teams knew the match-ups and game locations for tomorrow’s quarterfinals.
What that meant for the U.S. equipment and training staff was that it remained at the rink following Team USA’s 5-2 win over defending world champion Czechia yesterday, a game that ended just after 7 p.m. and secured the #2 spot in Group B for Team USA. It also meant that players and staff, along with families and guests of Team USA, had to wait to find out what the plans were for today until around 11:30 p.m. last night.
In the end, the Danes victory sent the U.S. on the road from Herning, Denmark, to Stockholm, Sweden, early this morning where it will play its quarterfinal game against Finland tomorrow.
For the U.S. equipment and training staff, the clock struck after 1 a.m. before they arrived back from the rink to the team’s hotel after loading up the trucks that carried the team’s equipment on the 12-hour journey from Herning to Stockholm.
And for Jessica Thibault, who is here leading logistics for Team USA and guests, it was a sleepless night ensuring travel and accommodations were in place for the transfer. The guest bus left Herning at 3:15 a.m. for Billund airport and the team departed at 7:15 a.m. to catch its plane with Team Czechia.
The U.S. handled the challenges of transferring countries today in stride – including one of the equipment trucks breaking down and causing practice to be moved back almost two hours. Overall, the mood among the group was upbeat heading into the playoff round.

The Globe is the host arena here in Stockholm for Team USA’s quarterfinal game tomorrow against Finland and also for both semifinals and the bronze and gold-medal game. It holds approximately 14,000 spectators for hockey and was opened in 1989. Team USA earned bronze at The Globe in the 2013 world championship by virtue of a 3-2 shootout win over Finland, 3-2, behind two shootout goals from Alex Galchenyuk and 36 saves from John Gibson. John Vanbiesbrouck, who oversees international hockey for USA Hockey and is part of the management group for the U.S. Men’s National Team, played for Team USA in the world championship at The Globe shortly after it opened. He had the misfortune of breaking his jaw late in the third period of a game against Poland … The theme of this year’s world championship is “Feel The Pulse” which aims to capture the energy and excitement of ice hockey and create a sense of community celebration … The sentiment after practice today at The Globe was that the ice was excellent and significantly better than at Jyske Bank Boxen in Denmark … In a classy move, U.S. head coach Ryan Warsofsky got players and staff together in Team USA’s locker room briefly prior to practice today to thank all involved in the significant efforts to move the U.S. operation to Stockholm … Frank Nazar has 11 points, including six goals, to pace Team USA through seven games of the world championship … Team USA has won three of its last four quarterfinal games.

Team USA had the day off as it gets set to face Czechia tomorrow at 4:20 p.m. local (10:20 a.m. ET/NHL Network) in its seventh and final preliminary round game. This morning had the opportunity for players to receive treatments at the team hotel, and performance coach Brian Galivan also ran the players through a late morning team stretch/activation outside in the parking lot at the team hotel. It was a beautiful 70-degree day here in Herning for players, staff, families and friends to enjoy.
Legendary U.S. coach Jeff Jackson, who played a primary role in designing USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program, retired this year after a 26-year run as an NCAA Division I men’s ice hockey head coach, including 20 seasons at Notre Dame and six campaigns at Lake Superior State. U.S. defenseman Andrew Peeke, who played three seasons for Jackson at Notre Dame, including serving as team captain his final campaign in 2018-19, had this to say about his former coach. “Obviously, he’s an unbelievable coach. For me going in there, I kind of felt like I went from being like a high school boy and turned into being a man real quick with him at the helm. He helped me grow as a player, but more importantly as a person. I have a lot respect for him and what he’s done in his career.”
While the players had the day off, the U.S. equipment staff was at the rink this morning and for part of the afternoon preparing for a potential move to Stockholm for the quarterfinals. The U.S. will not know until sometime around 11 p.m. tomorrow night whether they will play their QF game in Herning or have to move to Stockholm. If it’s a move to Stockholm, then late tomorrow night Team USA’s entire operation, including player bags, skate sharpeners, sticks, medical supplies, and supporting trunks, will have to be packed up and loaded into a truck that will drive overnight to be ready to meet Team USA in Stockholm. If the U.S. stays in Herning, then it will be business as usual, knowing, however, that a win in the quarterfinals will ultimately result in a move to Stockholm where the semifinals and medal games will be played.
The IIHF uses a crossover format in the men’s worlds with the top finisher in Group A playing the number four seed in Group B and the second-place team in Group A facing #3 in Group B, etc. In general, the top 2 teams in each Group get to play their quarterfinals in the city they’ve played the preliminary round. There are, however, always certain rules each year that ensure the host team plays its quarterfinal in their country. This year, that means both Denmark and Sweden are guaranteed to play at home if they advance to the quarterfinals. There is a possibility that Denmark could finish fourth in Group B and Sweden #1 in Group A, and if that were to happen, the “cross-over” quarterfinal format would be washed out and the teams would play the quarterfinal round against the teams in their group. It is also possible that Denmark could finish fourth in Group B and Canada first in Group A, and in that scenario, Canada would have to travel to Herning for the quarterfinal and the #2 team in Group B would have to travel to Stockholm for the quarterfinals. Stay tuned for an interesting final day of preliminary round play in the men’s worlds tomorrow!

In the end, it was an important 6-3 victory for Team USA over Germany in preliminary round play here at the 2025 IIHF Men’s World Championship. Prior to its skate today at the practice rink, the U.S. took its team picture. Veteran IIHF photo staff Chris Tanyoue and Matt Zambonin — along with assistance from the rink staff — got the chairs and benches in place for the picture, and after the players and staff were in place, Zambonin directed some final movement for symmetry and then took the photo. Following the team photo, a number of group shots were taken, including coaches, captains, goaltenders and groups of players and/or staff from various colleges/universities or NHL teams.

Bill Guerin, general manager of the NHL’s Minnesota Wild, arrived in Herning today and will be here through the tournament quarterfinals. Guerin is the GM of the 2026 U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team. It was largely a day off for players today as the U.S. gets set to face Norway in an important game tomorrow here in Herning. Two players – defenseman Zach Werenski and goaltender Hampton Slukynsky, along with goaltending coach Thomas Speer made the journey to the practice rink this morning to hit the ice. Equipment manager Jeff Camelio, athletic trainer Stan Wong and Dr. Doug Weiss accompanied the group. Speer ran the players through a snappy 30-minute session. Werenski arrived here in Herning yesterday and would have played against the Swiss, however, his equipment did not arrive with him. He was happy to see his hockey bag this morning so he could get in a skate before tomorrow’s tilt vs. Norway.
Werenski played for Team USA in February’s 4 Nations Faceoff, where the U.S. lost a heart-breaking overtime contest to Canada in the championship game. He was also part of the U.S. Men’s National Team for last year’s world championship. A finalist for the Norris Trophy as the top defenseman in the NHL, Werenski is a champion for American players competing in the world championship.
“I want to see us have success in tournaments like these,” Werenski said. “The U.S. hasn’t won this tournament in almost 100 years. We don’t medal very often at this World Championship. I feel like it’s something we have to get back to doing consistently is every year at the end of the (NHL) season, if you’re not in the playoffs or you’re not injured, guys should want to come here consistently every single season and build USA Hockey to be a consistent winner at the men’s level. That translates to 4 Nations and World Cups and Olympics.”

Dr. Doug Weiss presented every member of Team USA with a challenge coin at a team dinner back on May 7. The coin features a six-pointed star on one side that separates the six services — Navy, Army, Marines, Coast Guard, Air Force, and Space Force. In the middle of the star is a five-pointed star that represents and honors gold star family members and their fallen sons and daughters. The words Honor, Integrity and Respect are along the outer rim of the coin. The other side depicts a hockey player, USA Hockey logo and a representation of the American flag.
Weiss, who is an orthopedic surgeon, has a unique story. He joined the Navy back in 2019 at 55 years-old. While it was perhaps unconventional, he felt after his mother passed away – and as time went on — that he enjoyed his work, but felt there was something more that he needed to do. The call to serve was in his heart. He shares he wanted to do something bigger than himself, for his country and something bigger than the paycheck. He started at the Naval Hospital at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina and was then deployed to Helmand Province in Afghanistan in the spring of 2020 for a seven-month tour with a 10-person medical team serving a Marine-forward operating base. He returned to Camp Lejeune and also served orders in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Weiss finished his service in Sept. 2023.
He has served as the team physician for two U.S. Men’s National Teams and also a pair of U.S. National Junior Teams and U.S. Under-18 Men’s National Teams.
It’s hard to appropriately describe the atmosphere surrounding the IIHF Men’s World Championship, but the collection of fans across the world – with their varied garb, chants, and crazy enthusiasm – both in the arena and through the city – is unique and worth experiencing. Next year’s world championship moves to Switzerland – Zurich and Fribourg … It was a beautiful day here in Herning today – 68 and sunny – and players and staff had the chance to enjoy the city. Activities included golf for some, running along the many scenic routes, or enjoying a meal on the patio of a local Herning establishment. Rest and recovery were also an important part of the day for Team USA after back-to-back games … Hall of Famer goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck, who is part of the management team for the 2025 U.S. Men’s National Team and works full-time for USA Hockey as assistant executive director of hockey operations, attended an early afternoon reception hosted by Dorte West, the mayor of Herning, for dignitaries from the eight countries participating in the world championship here … USA Hockey is the host federation for the IPC Para Sled Hockey World Championship May 24-31 in Buffalo, New York.
