There is no denying what the main event is in tonight’s Chicago Blackhawks vs. Washington Capitals tilt. Our Blackhawks vs. Capitals prediction and player props back the hosts to win comfortably while discussing Alex Ovechkin’s player props as he chases history.
Hyped, anticipated, and analyzed more than any other NHL storyline in a generation, all eyes are on the Great 8, who is just three goals away from being immortalized in the history books. Can he get one step closer tonight? The puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (NHL Network) tonight from Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.
Here are my best Blackhawks vs. Capitals and player props for tonight’s NHL matchup with my pick confidence based on a 1-to-5-star scale. Be sure to check out the rest of our NHL picks along with our guide on how to bet on NHL.
As of 2 p.m. ET, the Capitals are the -380 moneyline favorites to beat the Blackhawks (+310) in tonight’s NHL matchup at 7 p.m. ET from Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. I predict the Capitals will win a game with six goals or more.
Here are the latest Blackhawks vs. Capitals odds and betting lines from our best live betting sites.
Money has come in on the visitors early before tonight’s tilt, which is a surprise given Chicago’s poor form. The Blackhawks moved from +325 to +310 on the moneyline, which, in turn, saw Washington’s odds shorten from -410 to -380 in the hours leading up to the puck drop.
I have a feeling Capital One Arena will represent a house of horrors for the Blackhawks, who probably cannot wait for the golf season to start. They have lost 11 of the last 12 games, including seven-game and four-game skids. In those 11 defeats, Anders Sorensen’s team allowed at least four goals seven times.
In the current four-game slide, Chicago has picked the puck out of its net five times in three successive outings against New Jersey, Vegas, and Utah. While I sympathize with Sorensen’s plight, I can’t fathom the Blackhawks’ top brass removing his interim tag in the offseason.
So, who will coach the brutal Blackhawks? Whoever decides to step into the role is made of a stronger constitution than myself, but I digress.
The Blackhawks won’t get any sympathy from a Capitals team enduring their worst slide of the season. They’ve lost four of five games for the first time, and I expect them to take their mounting frustration out on the hapless Blackhawks. This is only a two-star play due to the expensive price our best NHL betting sites are charging.
The Over 6.5 goals bet is more appealing for optimizing your potential return. However, I’m less confident the Blackhawks will score enough to help eclipse the six-goal threshold. That said, the Caps’ defense hasn’t resembled their best recently, so I predict a 5-2 Capitals triumph.
Best bet: Capitals -1.5 (-148 via DraftKings)

I think he’ll score; our best sports betting apps think so, and I’m pretty sure most of the watching populous does, too. That’s why the price is so high. You can lock him in at -135 or -140, carrying implied probabilities of 57.45% and 58.33%, respectively.
If you’ve been following our Ovechkin goals record odds, you’ll know the probability of him breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record of 894 goals skyrocketed after he scored in three straight games. I predicted he would score against Winnipeg and Buffalo, which he did, but said he wouldn’t against Carolina.
So, that brings us to tonight’s game against the Blackhawks; I analyzed when and how Ovi will break Gretzky’s mark, backing him to net at least one against Chicago. For him to score two is priced at +350 via bet365. That outcome is more than feasible, as he has netted 15 times in 25 games against the Blackhawks.
Ovechkin to score once is only a three-star play due to the long odds.

Strome has the most assists on Ovechkin goals this season, setting the Great 8 up on 18 of his 38 tallies. Leading the team in assists with 49, Strome has four helpers in the previous three games and 15 in the last 24.
He’s also a permanent fixture alongside Ovechkin on the first power play unit. Strome might have to find another way to notch a point, though, as the Blackhawks boast the eight-best road penalty kill (81.2%).
Best odds: -110 via bet365 ($10 to win $9.09)

With 66 points in 75 games, Protas is one of the more reliable Caps’ scorers. He’s been even more consistent recently, notching 16 points in the last 15 games, including at least one in seven of the previous nine.
I’m expecting the Caps to light the lamp five times. If that comes to fruition, Protas should secure at least one apple.
