The unseeded Boston University Terriers (24-13-2) look to cap off their improbable run with a win over the No. 4 Western Michigan Broncos (33-7-1) in tonight’s Frozen Four championship game. The puck drop is slated for 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN2) from the Enterprise Center in St. Louis.

Western Michigan’s 3.93 goals per game ranks second nationally, trailing only the team they just beat, Denver. Their offense ran the show early in that game before letting Denver back into the mix late. The Broncos got off a whopping 47 shots on goal while holding Denver to just 22. Pulling that off against the country’s highest-scoring offense is incredible.
One concern here is Western Michigan’s goalie, Hampton Slukynsky. While he ranks a very impressive sixth in goals allowed per game (1.9), his save percentage (92.2%) is a not-so-great 19th. Slukynsky has benefited massively from his team’s ability to control time of possession, so it’s worth wondering whether he can handle the pressure. WMU has won nine in a row, but in the team’s last loss, Slukynsky gave up four goals on 18 shots.

Boston University is now on a three-game winning streak, cutting through Ohio State, Cornell, and Penn State to get here. Those aren’t the most impressive opponents, though, so it’s worth asking whether they can stand up to No. 4 Western Michigan on this stage. The biggest red flag for me here is the penalty kill, which is a below-average 37th (78.8%). 
While BU’s defense has been shaky, freshman goalie Mikhail Yegorov has been excellent since taking over in the net. He ranks a steady 11th in goals against per game (2) and sixth in save percentage (93.4%). Many of BU’s defensive struggles may fall on the shoulders of their former goalie, Mathieu Caron, who ranked 68th in save percentage (89.9%).

Although Western Michigan’s double-overtime win over Denver was thrilling (just watch the final goal below), I’m skeptical of this program’s ability to clinch the championship. The betting market is, too. Boston University is now favored despite not entering the tournament as a top seed like Western Michigan did.
Boston University head coach Jay Pandolfo has been here before with Boston University, both as a player in the mid-90s and as a coach in the last two years. He finally punched his ticket to the Frozen Four championship game as a coach by beating Penn State on Thursday, bringing his career winning percentage to 68%.
On the other side of the arena, Western Michigan head coach Pat Ferschweiler is making his first Frozen Four appearance ever, either as a player or as a coach. His career winning percentage of 58% trails Pandolfo’s by a meaningful margin, too. Western Michigan has never won an NCAA hockey title, so he is looking to make history.
While a Western Michigan win would be a wonderful story, Boston University has an advantage in experience, at head coach, and in the net. The Terriers are also the only team in the country with two top-10 players in goals per game, seventh-ranked Quinn Hutson (0.64) and eighth-ranked Cole Eiserman (0.62). Back them to win outright.
