The Chicago Blackhawks enter tonight’s game against the Eastern Conference’s top team with four straight losses and only one win in their last 12 games. The Washington Capitals have lost four of their last five games, and they are without their top goaltender, Logan Thompson. The likely Vezina Trophy finalist left Tuesday’s game with an upper-body injury and will “miss some time.”
The biggest story in the world of hockey is Alex Ovechkin’s pursuit of Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record for goals. He enters tonight just three away from becoming the NHL’s greatest goal-scorer. Can he net a hat trick for history tonight? Well, Ovechkin already has a historic hat trick against the Blackhawks in his career. On December 13, 2022, he lit the lamp three times at the United Center to join Gretzky and Gordie Howe as the only players in NHL history to have scored 800 goals.
Two of Ovechkin’s 33 career hat tricks have occurred this season – one against the Vegas Golden Knights in November and the other against the Edmonton Oilers in February. He netted a hat trick against tonight’s starting goaltender, Spencer Knight, on November 26, 2021, when he was a member of the Florida Panthers. Ovechkin has four goals in three career games against Knight.
Interim head coach Anders Sorensen has made two changes to his lineup after Wednesday’s 3-2 overtime loss to the Colorado Avalanche. Philipp Kurashev will draw in for Lukas Reichel on the third line, while Kevin Korchinski returns on the back end. Ethan Del Mastro will come out for Korchinski. According to Sorensen, Reichel is scratched for missing a team meeting this morning.
