NEW ORLEANS — A professional hockey team could be coming to the Crescent City.
According to NHL analyst Kevin Weeks, a meeting was held in New York City to discuss bringing an expansion team to New Orleans.
Week says that NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly and other sources were involved.
Executive Vice President of ASM Global Doug Thornton told our partners at The Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate that he has received no contact from any group interested in bringing an NHL team to New Orleans. ASM Global manages multiple entertainment venues in New Orleans, including the Smoothie King Center.
The New Orleans Brass played in the Smoothie King Center from 1999 to 2002. Of course, the building was called the New Orleans Arena then.
It’s unclear who is leading the group pitching for New Orleans. A new minor league hockey franchise is coming to Monroe, and that team’s owner has talked about the NHL in New Orleans.
The NHL currently has 32 teams. League officials have not said they’re expanding again soon, but Phoenix is reportedly hoping to get a team.
Both Atlanta and Houston are building hockey arenas in hopes of getting a team, and at least six other cities have expressed interest, so if the NHL expands, the competition will be stiff.
