The NHL will take a two-week hiatus and there will be no All-Star game this year. Instead, this round-robin, best-on-best international men’s hockey tournament features NHL players from the United States, Canada, Finland and Sweden.
A win in regulation counts as three points, a win in overtime or a shootout counts as two and a loss in overtime or a shootout earns one point. The two teams with the most points at each round will advance to face each other in the championship game.
The games will take place Feb. 12-20 with host cities Montreal, Canada and Boston, Massachusetts. USA and Canada are the co-favorites.
The Canadians championship hopes are on the line after falling to the United States, 3-1, in an emotional encounter at the Bell Centre on Feb. 15. If they can defeat Finland in regulation, they set up a championship rematch for the ages on Feb. 20 at TD Garden.
Canada, Sweden and Finland each have two points in the tournament. Canada and Finland both defeated Sweden, giving them the tiebreaker. If Canada-Finland heads to overtime, that opens the door for Sweden to sneak into the final with a regulation victory over the United States later tonight.
Connor McDavid, a three-time Hart Trophy winner, will treat this game like a Game 7 in the Stanley Cup playoffs. He has just two points in his two games in the 4-Nations confrontation. Except McDavid to shine similar to his pressure-packed playoff moments with the Edmonton Oilers last season.
McDavid, along with Nathan MacKinnon and team captain Sidney Crosby, will have a favorable matchup against a Finland squad that has struggled to defend in the tournament. The loss to the United States snapped Canada’s 26-straight international game victories with Crosby on the roster. He had three assists in the opener but was relatively quiet against the Americans.
The Canadians could also have defenseman and Colorado Avalanche star Cale Makar back after missing the tilt with the United States due to illness.
They shouldn’t need another magical moment from Mitch Marner, but the Finns should be aware of his timely presence if this one happens to come down to the wire.
St. Louis Blues goalie Jordan Binnington is expected to get the third consecutive start. But head coach Jon Cooper has not officially named a starter, which leaves the door open for Las Vegas Golden Knights goalkeeper Adin Hill if things go awry.

Finland is riding an emotional wave after being blasted by the United States, only to answer back with a massive victory over rival Sweden, 4-3, in overtime. Mikael Granlund cinched the game-winner. That gave the Finns life to shock the world and potentially punch their ticket to the championship game in their own rematch with the Americans.
The Finns are confident they can hang with Canada after going toe-to-toe with the United States for two periods before the floodgates opened.
Anton Lundell leads the team with seven shots in the tournament. He will need to test Binnington and help the Finns break through. An early goal would go a long way, as the pressure would build upon Canada with a possible raucous American crowd rooting against them.
Finland also received goals from Aleksander Barkov and Mikko Rantanen in the thriller with Sweden.
Along with a weak blue line, Finland’s goaltending continues to be a major question mark. They have allowed nine goals in two games and have swapped out goalies. They will run it back with Kevin Lankinen, who halted 21 of 24 shots against Sweden.
Will Finland shock the world and derail USA vs. Canada II?
