The Canadian media focused on two things Tuesday. Some bemoaned Connor McDavid’s suspension, and others chased the now red-hot NHL trade chatter surrounding J.T. Miller. Two Metro Division teams have joined the fray to acquire Miller from the Vancouver Canucks as Vancouver’s season goes splat. The Pittsburgh Penguins have a faint pulse in their playoff chase, but their chances rest on Sidney Crosby alone. Elsewhere in the Daily, Corey Perry avoided the nachos to score a goal against Washington, and the Utah Hockey Club had several patents for potential names rejected.
Since many of you follow me on X as well, you saw my pictures from Hollywood. This city is perhaps the weirdest, most impossible place to quantify. There remains the optimism that brought millions from the East—the sunshine, palm trees, and mountain vistas. Yet there is abject poverty and extreme wealth side by side. To enter all of the shopping in downtown LA, from the regular Ralph’s grocery store to Burlington Coat Factory, I had to pass multiple levels of security guards. The Burlington employees had to let me enter the shoe aisle.
Also, Hollywood is really not what you picture. The Hollywood sign is about a third of the size you expect. I went to Hollywood, saw it all, and have no reason ever to go back. It was more disappointing than a Christopher Nolan movie (Batman trilogy excluded).
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: We put the Penguins trade rumors under the microscope. There was an over-the-top report out there that needed to be examined. We also discovered just how important Sidney Crosby is to the Penguins this season. Check out the Penguins one-timers.
Joe Brand and Hannah Kirkell joined me on this week’s No Pucks Given podcast. With practice this morning, we combined the pod with a Live Chat, so the first 35 minutes are the podcast. In the next hour, we got lots of trade proposals and good questions about the future and the playoffs. Here’s the video version of the No Pucks Given podcast.
Here’s the audio version to download.
I can’t believe how many people watch and participate in these live chats. Hey, the more the merrier!
New Jersey Hockey Now: The rumors are hot now. The New York Rangers can’t seem to get the J.T. Miller deal done, so how about the swamp monsters hiding in their shadow? Here’s the latest, as the Rangers now have Metro competition willing to part with young players. The late-breaking report also linked the Carolina Hurricanes and the New Jersey Devils.
TSN: Craig Button wasn’t kind to the Ottawa Senators’ playoff hopes. He took Ottawa to the woodshed after a disappearing act against the Rangers. It was a good beatdown of one of the playoff hopefuls.
Ottawa Hockey Now: One of the problems in Ottawa is they revolve around one player, and if he’s not scoring or creating chaos, they aren’t very good. And right now, they aren’t very good. Danny McCloskey writes–what’s wrong with Brady Tkachuk?
Leon Draisaitl hammered the league over the Connor McDavid suspension. He didn’t mince words on the NHL’s decision to suspend McDavid for three games.
McDavid cross-checked a player in the face. Punch next time.
Philly Hockey Now: What are the Penguins’ rivals up to? Flyers general manager Daniel (Danny) Briere delivered his mid-season press conference. He addressed everything from the prospects pushing for playing time and the goalie situation to the Flyers’ trade deadline outlook.
Detroit Hockey Now: Many of the Red Wings you may remember from the 2008 and 2009 Stanley Cup wars with the Penguins have come back to the Detroit fold. Nicklas Lidstrom, Nicklas Kronwall, Kris Draper, and more work for the organization. One who doesn’t, though everyone seems to want him to come home but can’t make it happen, is Pavel Datsyuk.

It was a stupid play by McDavid (and Myers for what it’s worth). But if the refs had called a penalty on Garland and actually policed the game, the cross-check would’ve never happened. I think 3 games is stiff for both guys (give them a game or two), and even if it is considered special treatment, McDavid might be the best player ever. To continue to grow the game, you can’t voluntarily put him on the shelf for 3 games.
best offensive player, but defensively, nah. Do the crime, pay the time. but then again the jan. 6 unpatriots got off.
Why do people always feel the need to reference politics? I come here in order to escape that ridiculousness. Lol
Btw: it’s only the beginning, it will get worse. 4 years of fun!
Everything is already better.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
After introducing Johannsen’s jaw to his elbow, Karen Mcdavid finally got the managers attention trying to rearrange Conor Garlands teeth with a two hander in the face. If you’re arguing that McDavid is the face of the nhl, ask yourself if that’s really the brand the nhl wants? There’s a tremendous amount of talent in the league today, they don’t need a cheap, dirty player as their only ambassador. Good for the nhl for finally sending a message that no matter how big a star you are, you’re not bigger than the game
I don’t watch NHL games because of McCrybaby. You’d be screaming for a ten games suspension if someone had crosscheck McCrybaby in thr face. Boo hoo! Nuff said.
You don’t watch hockey because of Sidney Crosby. I’m going on a limb that’s not true.
Three-game suspension for McJesus? Really?! (Slap forehead here.)
The fire-sale aka everything must go sale, as Dan said, was mere exaggeration. It seems the only certain trade of when, not if, is Marcus Pettersson. I’m sure KD is willing to make other deals if the prices are met, but I wonder how much appetite around the league there is for the players PIT is willing to deal? Anyone know if there is there a trade freeze around the 4Nations tournament?
The NHL will be paused. Trades and roster moves can still happen during the tournament, but teams would like to have the time completely off. GMs looking at this like a soft trade deadline.
How games did Malkin get when he cross checked that guy in the face? I felt bad for that guy, he got jacked pretty good. I was disappointed Malkin acted that way.
