Three people have died and three others were injured following a shooting at a high school hockey game in Rhode Island, United States (U.S.) on Feb. 16.
According to NBC News, Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves said that the incident occurred at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena at around 2:30pm (U.S. time) likely over a family dispute.
The gunman was later found dead from a self-inflicted gun wound, reported CBS News.
Alleged family dispute
The shooting, which occurred during a match between the Coventry-Johnston team and the St. Raphael–Providence Country Day–North Providence–North Smithfield team, was filmed as the game was livestreamed.
A video circulating online showed the high school hockey players on the ice rink when shots were fired.
A few escaped the rink, while players on the bench ducked for cover before hurrying toward the exits.
Spectators in the stands also evacuated as the initial shots were heard.

Goncalves said: “It appears that this was a targeted event, that it may be a family dispute.”
Investigations suggested that only one family was allegedly involved in the dispute, reported NBC News.
Goncalves did not provide further details regarding the incident, but said that U.S. authorities are investigating the relationship between the shooter and those affected.Gunman found dead with gunshot wound
Following the incident, one adult was found dead inside the rink.
Another died at a hospital.
Goncalves confirmed that the alleged gunman was also reportedly found dead at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to CBS News, the schools involved confirmed that their students were safe and accounted for.
One high school hockey player said that he heard “a lot of shots” and that the incident “was very scary”.
He added that he immediately ran into the locker room after hearing gunfire.
Goncalves said a Good Samaritan had intervened and that it was “probably what led to a swift end of this tragic event”.
Schools have also said that they will provide mental health resources to the affected students.
